Sox come to terms with Kielty

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff February 5, 2008 06:30 PM

In a move that gives them insurance if (when?) they trade Coco Crisp, the Sox have come to terms on a one-year deal with outfielder Bobby Kielty. It's a nonguaranteed contract that will pay Kielty $800,000 if he makes the big-league roster, with an additional $300,000 in incentives. More later.

  1. Kielty needs to leave. We aren't paying him much, but he isn't a reliable backup. He's slow, and just try's to hit bombs..... release him.

  1. IF they trade him (Crisp)?? This should be more like, WHEN they trade him. They balked at the opportunity of securing a perennial CY YOUNG candidate for the next five years because they didn't want to trade Ellsbury. So that being said, he should be our starting CF for the next five years at least, thus resulting in the lack of need for Crisp.

Trade him for some LF power hitting prospect to take Manny's place in '09.

  1. I'm glad they signed Kielty. He's a hard nosed selfless Dirt Dog type guy who is comfortable with his role here in Boston and he's a nice complement off the bench who can spell Ellsbury and Drew against lefties. I also like that he performed well in limited playoff at-bats.

  1. Kielty is the antidote to C.C. Sabathia. Keeping him was the right thing to do.
