Tejada mum on investigation
KISSIMMEE, Fla - Astros owner Drayton McLane greets you with a robust hello and says "We're going to win the world championship!"
Nothing wrong with the boss being optimistic. But if that is to happen, a lot of things must turn around in a hurry.
As he stood and watched his team this morning he saw his new shortstop Miguel Tejada, having already addressed the media concerning the ongoing Department of Justice investigation on whether he might have lied to Congressional investigators in 2005 concerning his use of steroids, which could weigh on him and the team throughout the course of the season.
He also walked in to find his prized young outfielder, Hunter Pence, all cut up after he walked into a sliding glass door at his apartment yesterday.
Pence will only miss about a week of spring training and didn't severe any tendons.
"The guys have been joking around with me about it," Pence said, "but it's never fun to miss any part of spring training. It looks worse than it is."
Pence told reporters he was heading to the hot tub but made a pit stop at the bathroom. Apparently when he went he had left the door open, but the door was shut behind him. Pence apparently tried to jump over the door to get out, but landed through it, cutting his knees and hands.
Pence went to the emergency room at the local hospital bleeding heavily, was treated and released.
Tejada told reporters about what's hanging over him, "It's not pressure. That's what I always do all my career and just try to help the team. I'm going to working hard this spring training and I'm one of the pieces to make this team better."
Tejada, asked specifically about the investigation said, "“I can’t really talk about that situation because everything is under investigation. Right now I just want to talk about baseball because that’s really my focus right now. I’m really happy to be on this team. I just came here to win and play baseball.”
He said “I’m excited to be here. I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. Now I’m here and get a chance to be with all my teammates. I’m feeling good not just because everybody is waiting for me. It’s because I see all those great teammates. I’m happy to be here. Like I said, I’m excited to be here and I hope everything goes fine.”
GM Ed Wade said he has been given no indication by major league baseball as to whether Tejada would be suspended and plans to go forward with Tejada playing shortstop until he hears otherwise.
