Uh oh ... more shoulder woes for Schilling

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff February 7, 2008 01:50 PM

The Globe's Nick Cafardo and Gordon Edes are reporting that Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling will not be ready for the start of spring training because of shoulder issues, and is engaged in a dispute with the club over whether he needs surgery, according to sources with direct knowledge of the matter. Furthermore, the sources said the Red Sox attempted to void his $8 million contract for 2008. 1. He's definitely not the pitcher he once was but can still if healthy definitely help the Sox out in 2008.

I am sure most fans are happy now we didn't trade for Santana since the Sox have a wealth of pitching talent ready or almost ready.

Plus with Clay Buchholz ready to compete in the big leagues I am not as worried as I might have been.

  1. I'm finding it hard pressed to be exceptionally worried about this. Without Schilling, we start the season with a rotation resembling Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Buchholz, Wakefield and I can't say I'd cry about that. Take it easy rehabbing him and once he's ready, start resting Buch to avoid wearing him out.

  1. Can't say I am overly concerned as well, other then it hurts depth. BUT there are options out there. Maybe take a flier on Colon who is still a FA and there is still another option of packaging Coco & a prospect or two for an arm. Schill should have been looked as a solid #4 in the rotation and it should not be the end of the world to replace him.

  1. I think we all expected this scenario (Schill or Wake) as the way Buchholz gets major league innings this year, although June or July is what you expect. Now the proof is in the pudding. Many rookies do not live up to their billing, or their early success (when hitters don't know them). Okay kids, what have you got?
