Youk/Sox agree to terms

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff February 10, 2008 08:42 PM

Continuing their tradition of not going to arbitration with players in the Theo Epstein era, the Red Sox have agreed to terms with first baseman Kevin Youkilis. He'll make $3 million dollars this season on a one-year deal.

Youkilis had come in far from the number offered by the team. He asked for $3.7 million, while the team offered $2.525 million. Last season the Red Sox ended up renewing his contract at $424,500.

Relievers Kyle Snyder and Javier Lopez were the other Sox players who were eligible for arbitration this offseason. Lopez signed for $840,000. Snyder exchanged numbers with the Sox before signing a one-year contract for $835,000.

  1. It, obvious Youk's a smart guy. He probably would've have gotten the same amount if he went to arbitration. He'll put up better numbers this year and be in better position to command much more next year.

  1. They should have gave Youk 2 or 3 years. He plays the game with all he has . I think he is a good player. He plays hard for our boston team.
