Colon feels strong

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff March 17, 2008 03:08 PM

TAMPA - Well, almost predictably when a pitcher gets roughed up as much as Bartolo Colon did in today's game against the Yankees (it's 8-4 Yanks in the fifth), his comments are usually contrary to what everybody else thinks.

"I felt stronger this time (than in his first outing), but my control was not as good," Colon said.

Colon walked three, and allowed four runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning. He didn't get out of the first. The big thing for Colon is that his shoulder is not hurting. Colon said he wanted to thank the Sox medical staff for the work they've done in keeping him pain-free.

Although his performance today was painful to watch.

  1. It may have been painful for some to watch, but I thought Colon looked a lot better than I thought he would. He was routinely hitting 95 on the gun in just his second spring training start. I can see why he says he felt strong, since his velocity and movement were good, but his control was off (which is to be expected so early).
I think to say it was horrible is missing the point of spring training and not very astute for a baseball writer. Remember, the Yankees don't swing at anything close, and he had Abreu struck out on a 3-2 fastball on the corner. Then he was just missing up a lot, but is velocity was surprising at this stage.
