Cubs eyeing Crisp; Sox don't want Marquis
FORT MYERS, Fla. - While major league sources indicate the Chicago Cubs have Coco Crisp on their wish list, the Red Sox have no interest in expendable starting pitcher Jason Marquis or Arizona League MVP outfielder Sam Fuld.
Both of those names have made the rounds on the airwaves in Chicago, but major league sources indicate the Sox have no interest even with Josh Beckett's back injury potentially creating a need for depth in the starting rotation.
Neither young center-fielder Felix Pie or Fuld have nailed down the center-field job. The Cubs and Orioles are talking about a Brian Roberts deal off and on, a deal that could also include Jay payton. But that deal has been talked about for months and nothing has happened.
If the Cubs were to talk trade with the Red Sox, it would have to be for a different set of names - either prospects or bullpen help.

Don't give Coco away, whatever you do. He can still start in this league and Boston fans should be happy that we have him.
myy thought are that the sox dont need coco i think he was over rated when he came here he had one good year an has been a big disapointment ever since he came to boston his defense is among the best but his batting is hurting the sox elsbury can be a great fit in center so i would trade coco for a starting pitcher an some bullpen help to go along wit paplebon an okajima
If I'm Theo, I'd trade Coco for the right names or I don't trade him at all! F that, you've got to get something of value in return. Theo would never do a deal just to make room for Jacoby. If the Cubs want Coco? They're going to have to make a better offer then that!!
While I have no love for Coco I believe he will see alot of innings over Kielty if the Sox hold onto him. Manny isn't getting any younger and having Crisp allows you to rest Ortiz (DH Manny), Manny, or Jacoby (its a long season for a rookie, even if he has some big leauge experiance). I know Crisp doesn't want to platoon but why would the Sox trade for at best a #5 (they still have Tavarez and Colon to fill injury spots regardless if Schill pitches again) and add salary in the process.
If I am Theo and the Cubs are trying to move Marquis at all costs its going to cost Chicago some prospects. It would be nice to get a AAA 3B prospect, maybe Craig. The good news is I don't think Theo will dump Coco just to dump him.
There are too many "ifs" in the Sox' outfield when you consider the length of the season, so unless somebody can come up with something that actually HELPs us why would we want to give up a proven, high end defensive-at-least, quality guy for "junque"?????? I can't imagine Coco really wanting to go "anywhere' if it means a starting job when he can stay here and be part of this possible Bosox Dynasty? I were he i would be careful what i wish for as it may come true! After all, how many quality guys never get a WS ring? Surely, that must weigh on his mind! He should really thank his lucky stars that he is in Boston!
There is no chance the Cubs will give up much for Crisp since Pie is already a B/B+ prospect with the potential to be near All-Star quality as he grows/matures/gets experience...I think the Cubs realize that. They truly want Brian Roberts, but are smart to realize to not include Pie in the deal. My feeling is that with Eric Patterson playing well (and effectively blocked in their system), they will work out a deal like Gallagher/Cedeno/Patterson for Brian Roberts. All 3 of those players fill holes on Baltimore's roster (plug Patterson into the starting lineup, replacing Roberts).
Crisp is a decent player, but not much of an upgrade over Pie. Crisp is clearly superior defensively, but only because he is the best defensive CF'er in baseball...Pie is also better than average defensively, but is also already on par with Crisp offensively with potential to be much better offensively.
My questions is: how did Sammy Fuld get involved in this mix? While I'm partial to local players, the last thing the Sox need is another left handed outfielder. His resume is relatively impressive if you can get past the fact that it looks like he's more likely to be Theo's assistant than a ball player.
Crisp is the kind of hitter who needs regular starts to get his bat going, and that's why he isn't going to be happy in a platoon. He hasn't proven himself yet in the AL East offensively, but I for one suspect he's never really been 100%. Depth is always a good thing to have, but I really think pitching depth is more important than outfield depth. That being said, the Cubs offer is terrible. I see can see Theo dealing Crisp at the deadline for an established pitcher if we're in need of one, but otherwise, I don't see the point.
If the Cubs make a deal for Crisp it is because they are planning on moving Pie in the deal for Roberts. As much as the Cubs fan in me wants this deal for Crisp to happen so we can unload Marquis, it doesn't make much sense for the BoSox, Marquis is a number 5 at best in the NL, he would get rocked in the AL. We'd be better off offering up Sean Marshall or maybe Wuertz + prospects.
Rich Hill or bust Cubbies.
Keep Coco. Why do the Sox keep letting good 4th outfielders go and then looking for a replacement weeks later? Dave Roberts, Jay Payton, now Coco. Coco may not like a platoon, but the Sox need him. JD and Manny are going to sit sometimes and even if healthy they are certainly injuruy risks. Jacoby might be a future All-Star, but he hasn't proven he is better than Coco yet. Don't know why the Sox seem so eager to move him.
"i would trade coco for a starting pitcher an some bullpen help to go along wit paplebon an okajima"
Hey Marc, do you honestly think Coco Crisp is worth a starting pitcher and some bullpen help?!?! Seriously. Unless you're getting that starter and reliever from Single A, don't expect it.
If they Cubbies are serious, as they need help in the outfield, then how about either Geovany Soto (c) or Hosh Vitters 3rd base...Sox would have to throw in a minor pospect with Coco. Vitters is a 18 year old hitting machine and can replace lowell in few years.
Jerry,
Josh Vitters is the Cub's #1 prospect and Soto is their #2 prospect and this year's starting catcher (and in the discussions for N.L. ROY)...are Red Sox fans that delusional that the Cubs would give up their #1 or #2 for a back-up OF who can't hit??? The Red Sox have zero bargaining power in regards to Crisp because everyone knows that Ellsbury will be the starting CF'er.

If you think the cubs would give up either of those players your dead wrong. aramis well be getting up there in years by the time vitters is ready and i wont touch the soto comment. crisp is a decent 4th outfielder but i'd rather see pie given the chance to develop. the only way we're unloading pie is if roberts is in the deal.
You people are very delusional if you think Coco Crisp wants to sit on the bench. He has said openly that if he is not starting he wants to be traded. I would really hate to see him go (he IS the best defensive center fielder in the game), but his offense was in trouble his first month with the team when he broke his finger. Ever since then he hasn't been the same. Theo isn't going to make a deal unless he gets something worthwhile (sorry Jason Marquis, that is definitely not you). The organization values Crisp for his defense and the way he plays the game. I really don't want him to go, but he deserves to play somewhere everyday and showcase his full potential.
i really don't see the sox being interested in much the cubs could offer. their organization is too high on soto and patterson to trade them, and swapping crisp for fuld or matt murton would be pointless for both teams.
the cubs actually do have a surplus of arms down the pipeline, so i could see them being willing to part with some of their lesser prospects. i would deal crisp for carlos marmol straight up, but the cubs would be insane to do that. it would have to be someone like donald veal or carmen pignatiello. those two and fuld for crisp would be a very good deal for the sox and would get crisp the playing time he deserves in a place where the pitching is much weaker.
Cubs trade Soto for Crisp?!?! Are you kidding? You don't trade a stud catcher for a 4th outfielder. Face it Boston fans, like Rebel Outlaw states, Crisp is not worth as much as Boston would like to get. When a rookie is able to push you out of the starting line-up, you are not worth a starting pitcher AND bullpen help. As a Cub fan, I'd like to have Crisp, because of his speed/versatility and the fact he is a switch-hitter. But I would be happy to have Jay Payton as the fourth outfielder.
The offers I have heard on here for Coco Crisp are embarrassing, Josh Vitters!! Pie!! Hill!! Fuld! These posts almost sound like their coming from Yankee fans in the midst of identity crisis. The Cubs will not be giving up any top prospects for Coco Crisp, he wants to be moved and they know it. Becareful if you don't move him he might suddendly come up limp and become even less productive if he doesn't start, and then blame it on ABs/inning played.
The Red Sox should consider a solid hitting/avg fielding Matt Murton for a poor hitting but superb fielding Crisp. The reason, Crisp has peaked with the Red Sox especially if he is not going to start. Murton is a team player who would develop in the laid back atmosphere of Fenway. I still don't understand why Marquis is being dissed, the money may be a basis for argument but we're talking about the Red Sox, who posted 50 million dollars just to talk to an overrated/old Japenese pitcher. Marquis pitched solidly all year except for September, when he obviously was fatigued from carrying an underperforming Cubs staff (cough Zambrano) through April and May. Pitch him around 150 IP and I think you got yourself a winner.
I just wanted to interject a Cubs fan opinion on this...Pie is a decent outfielder obviously with room to grow. His offensive problem is he thinks he has to jack it out of the yard every at bat. He lacks discipline and seems to resist coaching to get his swing under control. He's all yours. Murton, he can go, he's decent, but expendable.
Soto...hell no. He is already set to be the starting catcher ahead of Henry Blanco, and the other guy...cant remember his name, sent back to AAA.
Micah Hoffpauir could help you at first base...batting a decent .439 right now, and has played every game this spring. He's getting a little playing time in the outfield this week. Throw in Marquis, who has stepped up his game this spring since Pinella called him out, whaddya say...we got a trade?
