Sox-Rays ends in a tie

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff March 13, 2008 04:10 PM

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The game had ended in a 3-3 tie in 10 innings.

Chris Carter, who can really hit, just stroked a double into the gap in the bottom of the 10th inning to tie it, 3-3. The Rays had taken a 3-2 lead on a Chris Richard sac fly off Beau Vaughan.

Carter entered today's game hitting .357 with four RBI.

Carter was then pinch-run for by Bubba Bell. Never a good sign when a guy named "Bubba" pinch runs for you. Sox again failed to get the winning run in as Keith Ginter struck out..

  1. 'Never a good sign when a guy named "Bubba" pinch runs for you. '

I've been rereading this for hours, hoping it will mean something other than what it seems to mean.

Using "Bubba" as an ethnic stereotype is no more funny or acceptable in the 21st century than its equivalent in racial terms. I hope this was just an ill-thought-out slip.
