Francona and Theo chat with Coco
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Willie McGinest used to say "You can't make the club from the tub." In the case of Coco Crisp, "you can't make a trade from the shade."
If Coco Crisp wants an exit out of Boston, teams want to see that he's healthy and playing before trying to swing a deal. The Chicago Cubs have had some interest in Crisp, but won't do anything until they see him play.
That wasn't the purpose of Terry Francona and Theo Epstein's conversation with Crisp this morning. It was more to gauge where he was with his groin problems. Crisp is making progress, taking a few swings. It's also getting down to the last six days before the team leaves for Japan and the Sox wanted to make him aware of the timetable so he understands the season starts soon.
Francona also addressed Julio Lugo and his back woes. Lugo could be ready for game action by Friday or Saturday.
Josh Beckett, who had treatment this morning, is feeling better. Francona said they're now trying to determine when they might get Beckett out on the field to play catch.
Francona said he conferred with Dustin Pedroia's wife Kelly before inserting him into the lineup. "Since I knew she wears the pants in that family, I asked 'Do I have your permission to put him in a game?' (She said) 'Yeah, I have to get him out of here.'"
Lots of Bartolo Colon talk this morning. Francona is really pleased with how Colon's throwing and is eager to see him in the game against a pretty good Rays lineup. Colon's next start after today is slated against the Yankees next Monday in Tampa.

We need to trade him before it's too late! Jacoby IS our starting cf, not Crisp. We can use Kielty as our 4th OF. TRADE CRISP! Maybe a lil' Jason Marquis for Coco swap?
P.S.- Where did Hinske end up signing?
Marquis, Murton and Fuld for Crisp and Lugo.
Marquis, Murton and Fuld for Crisp and Lugo.
Hinske is a backup for Tampa.
I believe the Sox already said that have no interested in Marquis or Sam Fuld. Last I heard the Sox wanted Howry and Donaldson but that doesn't seem probable. Who knows like the article says Coco needs to play before anybody will trade for him.
I think hinske is on the rays
Please take Jason Marquis.
Hinske signed with hTampa Bay: The new enemies of the NY Yankees!
If Coco could just be convinced that, between rest for the starting three outfielders, the inevitable injuries both Drew and Manny will have, and the still uncertain status of Ellsbury (yes, we KNOW he's going to be great...but, maybe it will take a few months or a year before he becomes consistent?), Crisp should get plenty of at bats...and certainly, lots of action in the field.
If we could get something decent in a trade, I'm all for it. But, with Crisp's offensive game hardly inspiring the last two years, and given his current injury situation, who is going to give the Sox quality players for this guy? He's more valuable to us than anything we can get for him right now...IMHO.
Hinske signed a minor league deal with the Rays
Jason Marquis, are you kidding? He's garbage. Ideally, I'd like to see the Sox get a solid catcher prospect. Maybe they can toss a little something extra in with Coco and acquire Salty from Texas? That would be a nice addition to the club, not some washed up mediocre at best pitcher from the NL that would fare much worse in the AL East.
P.S.- Where did Hinske end up signing?
minor league deal with TBay
Until Jacoby proves himself the center field job is still up for grabs.
Marquis would be good if he learns to listen to his coaches and manager. He's got all kinds of good stuff with a strong arm and is young. He's a 200 inning a year pitcher. He's also a .500 record till he learns to listen and take control of his temper. The Braves and Cardinals had problems and if the Cubs are looking to include him in a deal with a 12 - 9 then there must be a reason.
I would love to have him at age 29. Maybe he will listen to John Farrell!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hinske is actually with The Rays. Surprise to me due to the fact he was rookie of the year a few years back. Seems as though he just needed some good coaching to get him back on track. Sometime's Tito doesnt get through to everybody. Marquis Sucks. Leave Kielty around and bring up some fresh talent from our outstanding farm system. Maybe we can strike GOLD again like we did with El's. Crisp seems as though he is done being Red Sox Nation spokesman sooo.....Parting is such sweet Sorrow. However think about what we gave up to get Crisp.....HMMMMMMM....Ouch!!
KEEP COCO
No way we could get Salty for Crisp. If the Sox don't want him it doesn't mean other teams do, or that we could get a star player for him.
I agree with Mike. Keep Coco.
I've got to agree. What are you talking about with Marquis? He is horrible. Read any scouting report on him by anyone who knows baseball and you will soon figure out he is horrible. He wouldn't last long in the american league and would get rocked in fenway. I think some of you guys just see a name and say "oh yeah, we should get him." Do a little research. His ERA the last 3 years is 4.13, 6.02 and 4.60. What do you think that will translate to in the American league?????
I'm not sure if Coco's attitude is interfering with the Sox clubhouse or not, but if it isn't then I would say keep him. With the way Francona gives players "scheduled" days off and how he loves to take lefties out every time a lefty pitches, Drew and Ellsbury will be seeing quite a bit of the bench. Coco's defensive prowess allows us to still cover great ground in the outfield, and if he gets on base, his speed is always a threat. If we had to trade him I would love to get a backup catcher to bring up. Tek isn't going to be around forever and he has slumped at the plate the past 2 years, and our prospects don't look too good offensively.
