Grand slam, J.D. Drew

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff March 23, 2008 07:50 AM

Looks like Japan agrees with J.D. Drew. That, or he's ready to get off to a good start to the season.

Drew just hit a grand slam, after hitting a three-run home run in yesterday's game against the Hanshin Tigers. We'll have to see how Drew prefers the smaller Japanese balls (which he's hitting) to the baseballs he's used to in the States.

Either way, he's certainly getting some nice distance with them.

It's now 4-2, Red Sox, in the top of the sixth inning.

  1. The AP reported yesterday that they've been using major league balls and not the smaller Japanese ones as was rumored. Is that not the case today or are you just misinformed?

  1. According to Joe and Dale on the radio broadcasts of the two exhibition games from Japan, the Japanese pitchers were throwing NPB-regulation balls, while the Sox pitchers (and presumably the A's pitchers too) were throwing MLB-regulation balls.

So while the Sox pitchers were throwing the regular, larger balls, Drew has been knocking the stuffing out of the smaller Japanese ones. Lets hope he keeps it up once he's back to the regular balls.

  1. The Japanese are pitching with the smaller Japanese balls, the US pitchers are pitching with US balls. So the balls JD Drew hit out were the smaller Japanese variety.

  1. Any chance we can trade Drew and his outrageous contract to the Giants for some sushi and a mid-grade starting pitcher?

  1. I'd give him away to anyone who bought his contract. Moss is ready for the Majors, would do at least as well as Drew did in 2007, and costs 20 times less.
