Suffice to say, Hank Steinbrenner's gonna be a lot of fun in the future.

He's certainly amping up the Sox-Yankees rivalry with strong comments in which he's defended his Yankees as the top dog.

This morning he was in another playful mood and insisted that everything he said was in good fun. One thing he said was that he would never be a member of Red Sox Nation, per the invitation of Sox owner John Henry, who responded to an e-mail to the Boston Herald concerning Steinbrenner's most recent claim that the Yankees were the most popular team in the country.

He also hinted strongly the Sox and Yanks could be future business partners in an undisclosed venture or two down the road. Steinbrenner said he would not go into what that might be, but did rule out a super TV network.

Here are a few things Steinbrenner said this morning at Legends Field prior to the Yanks-Phils game which was also Andy Pettitte's spring training debut:

On John Henry:

"John used to be an owner of the Yankees and he's a great guy. My dad always loved the guy. I love him. Hal loves him. And he's done a tremendous job with the Red Sox. My only point was simple and that is that the Yankees brand is the biggest in the country. And everybody knows that. Obviously it's Yankees Nation. That's not meant as a cut to the Red Sox. In truth. I'm just not saying that to be nice - but John Henry has done an unbelievable job with the Red Sox brand.

All the years he spent away from the team, was he always into the Yanks-Sox rivalry?

"Every Red Sox fan is and Yankee fan is. I can tell you this, we've got a lot in common, too. The Yankees ownership and Red Sox ownership have a lot in common and have a lot of common interests. God, I hate to scare Red Sox or Yankee fans, but you never know we might end up being partners in the future outside of baseball. We have a lot in common. We have a lot in common. In baseball and outside of baseball. Even though the rivalry will always be the greatest rivalry in American sports, you can say that the Yankees and Red sox ownerships are definitely friends. No question."

A possible network?

"No, no, it's not that."

Seems as though the Yankees and Red Sox are going in the same direction trying to introduce younger players.

"I think they're looking at Buchholz and Lester a lot like we're looking at Hughes and Kennedy. They're going to be counting on them at some point as we are with our guys."

Steinbrenner was asked whether he would offer to send Yankee stuff to John Henry in response to the Red Sox Nation invitation.

"I'll respond to the offer of being an honorary member of Red Sox Nation later. He's already got Yankees' stuff. He was a limited partner. He's got the rings," Hank said.

More rivalry comments:

"It's what it is and always will be. It's a strange and unusual situiation. A lot of things in common. Need to stick together on a lot of things but it'll always be a huge rivalry on the field. Even the players respect each other now. I don't see the hatred and the acrimony. I think that's a healthy thing. Respect is a healthy thing. There's Army-Navy and that's a tremendous rivalry but there's a mutual respect."

Steibrenner reiterated, "I'm not gonna join Red Sox Nation - honorary or not. I'll respond to that later. Trust me, I'm never gonna join Red Sox Nation."

  1. Blah, blah, blah. He was an idiot yesterday, he's an idiot today, and he'll be an idiot next week. The comments were ignorant. I live in Santa Clara. When the Sox play the A's, Angels, or Padres, it looks like a home game for the Red Sox. But I suppose that's just 20,000 people flying across the country. Oh wait, maybe not. Maybe it's all the people that actually live in those cities who are Red Sox fans. So obviously Jr. has never gone on a road trip. Whatever. Like it matters. Three games vs. NY has the same impact as three games vs. Baltimore. No one loss or win counts for more or less, even though that's the way it seems.

  1. I have been following baseball and the Boston Red Sox for some time now. I have done some tour of all the fields and ball parks with and without the Red sox in them. By far there are more fans wearing the logo of the Boston Red Sox. I got to Yankee stadium for Red Sox and Yankee games all the time because tickets are easier to come by and I must say Yankee stadium could pass for fenway park. Red Sox nation is here to stay and is stronger then ever,

  1. Marketing idea for Hanky:
"Hank's Yankee Hankies" to use after all his team's losses this year. Glad the Big Apple is so cocky that they think they are better than Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto, and, oh yes, Boston. Time to bring out Yankee memorabilia from the last century when the Heroes being "juiced up" won those World Series'. [cheaters?] Yes "they will be back"......way back!!!

  1. Fat, dumb, and happy or is that unhappy with that bunch of losers led by arod. He can hit 80 homers and knock in 200 runs during the regular season but he'll still be the biggest bust of all time in the playoffs. They will NEVER win a world series with him in the lineup.

  1. Hank obviously thinks that the term "Red Sox Nation" somehow means that the Red Sox are "America's Team". Red Sox Nation is simply a name for the Red Sox fan base, wherever located--it's not a claim that America as a whole is Red Sox Nation. I wouldn't dispute that "Yankees" is a bigger brand, but saying "it's Yankees Nation" completely misses the point. Yankees Nation is a bunch of arrogant, jackass fans with an inflated sense of entitlement, but no one's ever called that bunch "Yankees Nation" before. The term "Red Sox Nation" has been around for years--ask Shaughnessy. I agree -- Hank's an idiot, just like his old man.

  1. Keep going Hank. The way this guy runs his mouth off is going to be great for the rivalry, great for baseball, and great for the Red Sox. Nothing like giving your biggest opponent something to get their blood boiling. Thanks, Hank.

  1. I'll give the yanks this. Their hat is more popular in the hip-hop community. But as far as fans of baseball, the sox fans take the cake. Not even close!

  1. Note to Hal -- time to rein Fredo in

  1. Old trick, suggest something outlandish about someone. Sit back and watch him sounding ridiculous denying it.

"Trust me, I'm never gonna join Red Sox Nation."

  1. It is Red Sox Nation and Red Sox World. Take a walk through London, Tokyo or Hong Kong and you will see what I mean. Bosox hats and tee-shirts are everywhere. John Lord in Hong Kong.

  1. i hate to disagree with you, john--especially when you're right on so many fronts---but a win against the yankees does count just a little bit more than a win against the orioles for the simple fact that the sox and yanks directly compete for playoff spots, whilst the lowly orioles compete for nothing.

other than that bit, you're dead on.

  1. I think posters like #4 & #5 are silly (and I'm being nice). Grow up! It's just a game. No Sox players go home at night worrying about you, nor should they! Why would anyone (Yankee fans included) expend so much energy on millionaires when they could care less about you! It's just entertainment. Please get a life.

  1. John...you can add Tampa Bay, Baltimore & Atlanta to your list. No wonder the Sox do so well, the play about 120 home games a year.

  1. I'm disappointed in RSN and BDD....I'm a rabid Yankee fan and I live for the Rivalry...but come on...No photoshop pics or blogs on Theo's Mike Mussina - Kevin Brown comment but let Hank speak his mind and all Hell breaks loose...gimme a break.

P.S. I cant wait for the first Yanks-Sox game in the Bronx....be prepared to hear "18 and 1.....18 and 1....18 and 1....18 and 1...." Ha Ha Ha...thats right we didnt forget that "Yankees S*^K" chant after Pats won that Bowl

The Universe will return to order this year....be back I gotto PAK DE CAH..

  1. Nice going Ren. At least our ownership doesn't have 48% body fat like wannabe fat-man down in NYC. Why don't the Yankees work on a non-detectable version of HGH so they can compete at their year 2000 level? Sorry that our hand-me-down Cy Young has caused some stains on your great organization.

  1. Finally someone agrees with me, I knew when ARod was in the market for more money, and the RS were looking at him I pray that the Yanks will get him, when they did I called my RS buddy and told her we are going to win the Yanks got the Jinx.
