Pap, Sox agree to deal

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff March 6, 2008 03:58 PM

The Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon have agreed to a one-year deal worth $775,000.

That's more than closer Bobby Jenks got with a similar amount of service time, as he signed a $550,000 contract. Papelbon was looking for a deal in the range of $900,000, like the one signed by Ryan Howard at the same point in his career. He didn't quite get that, but he got a significant bump over his $425,550 salary from last season.

If the Sox and Papelbon hadn't reached this agreement, the Red Sox would have had the option of renewing his contract for an arbitrary figure.

The Red Sox have also agreed to terms with all 18 of their unsigned players, none of whom got renewed.

Oh, and the team has given up seven runs in the ninth inning, including a three-run homer by Luke May and a grand slam by Jason Repko. The three-run shot tied the score at 5-5. ...

Now it's a final, Dodgers win 9-6.

  1. Pap deal seems awfully cheap to me. What if the Sox had given him MORE than he had asked for?

  1. Now shutup and play Paps! The talking was all fun and cute last year, but honestly your the most dominating closer in baseball right now. Throw strikes and shut up. The team could have simply paid you what they were required, but they threw you a bone. You are now making more than Bobby Jenks and Prince Fielder, so be happy and just pitch!

  1. Sick & tired of athletes taking their "perceived" financial problems public through the media. Lifelong Sox fan but I don't really care about what Papelbon thinks he deserves.

  1. It's an insult. How much did they pay Gagme last year? They should have closed him long term. It could cost them more in the long term that they didn't.

  1. Pap is already locked up because of his limited service time so he doesn't become a free agent for a few years

  1. Lets get to reality here.... He pitches about 50% of the time (at most) so given 120 games he pitches about 60 times a year and averages about 3 batters per game. Which means he pitches to 180 batters per year. Which means he gets paid over 4.3K per batter. Not a bad payday if you ask me.

I agree that the Yankees have overpaid for Rivera... but that's their issue and not at our control. In fact, if they were smart they would pay Rivera at a per batter like Beckett (who makes about 10K per batter) and that would means he should make about 1.5 million... Now the Yanks can use the other 10 million to get a decent starter... They will have a tough time this year due to the mediocre pitching staff they have built.

  1. The MLB salary system is - and has been for some time - out of whack. Paps' contract is a bargain and it would have been at the amount he asked for, an added $200K or less. Why were they negotiating. His "ask" was extremely fair, given what other comparable and successful closers were earning, forget the nonsense of years in, etc. And then teams like the Sox wonder why a player won't take a "home discount" or opts to test the market? Treat them fairly, stop playing games, don't nickel and dime one of the players that got us the World Series trophy!

  1. Pap's is a talent with a big mouth. If he did not play baseball,he might have a hard time getting hired at Wal-Mart. He just anoy's me, Just like Clemen's does every time he opens his mouth. The Red Sox were carefull not to overwork him in 2007. I have a feeling Pap's in the long haul will end up in the scrapheap with alot of Arm troubles if the Red Sox don't use him carefully and limit his innings and appearances.
