Sox win, 6-5 in 10

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff March 25, 2008 09:46 AM

Though he did allow a run in the 10th inning, Jonathan Papelbon finished off the A's, giving the Red Sox the first win of the 2008 season.

A walk to Daric Barton to lead off the inning, plus a double to Emil Brown, brought Oakland within one run. But Brown ran into an out trying to head to third base on the throw into the infield. Bobby Crosby and Jack Hannahan both singled after that, giving the A's men on first and second with two outs.

Papelbon then got Kurt Suzuki to ground to first base, ending the game.

Sox in first place...

  1. Post-game comments:

Papelbon: "I'm not supposed to say it was the jet lag, but I still haven't gotten my routine down over here. I don't want to have to be held accountable for these types of decisions made by the team, while being paid what I'm being paid, and yet still expected to be one of the premier closers in baseball. Mariano Rivera doesn't get put in this kind of situation."

Lowell: "It's nice to get a win, but it's still a stretch of nineteen days away from home. We will have to keep battling."
