The word from DIRECTV

Posted by Barbara Matson, Globe Staff March 25, 2008 01:33 PM

Here's the official word from a DIRECTV spokesman on problems this morning with NESN and ESPN2 that kept the Sox game off the air until the seventh inning:

"We experienced some temporary technical difficulties early this morning that resulted in some channels not being available to customers. The majority of our channels were not affected and we have since corrected the problem. In the case of the Red Sox season opener, we were able to bring the NESN channel back up at the top of the seventh inning. ESPN2 came back on later, after the game was over. (Customers who have NESN or ESPN2 in
HD were able to see the entire game.) We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers - and particularly Red Sox fans. ESPN2 is planning to carry a repeat of the game at 2 p.m."

  1. DIRECTV offers an apology and then says, "go watch it this afternoon" when a majority of us are at work. Nice job. Dish Network all the way!

  1. DirecTv SUCKS!!!!! I always lose signal during storms and constantly have these rediculous issues. However, since I'm in NJ and the Pats are not on regular tv, I'm stuck with DirecTv like a hostage because they have the exclusive rights on football. As soon as they lose the exclusivity they will see a massive exodus.

  1. Wow. Wish I had HD. Except DirecTV has refused to offer me the same low-rate package they're offering new customers.

  1. That's it? What a bunch of crap! … Boy, that's great that the game is being repeated right now while all of New England is working. I wonder who's gonna win. … InDirecTV sucks!

  1. I just got a call from DirecTV saying basically sorry we don't care it was a Technical issue. After explaining how irate iI was they offered me a 70 cent credit for lost time due to the outage. Sure I wanted more but you know what if everyone of the 15 subscribers insist on this credit it will cost them 10.5 Million dollars in lost revenue. I urge everyone to insist on this credit.

  1. I know that I am just a dumb consumer, but I would actually prefer an explanation of the technical difficulties. I was running around in my jammies at 3 a.m. turning my receiver on and off and checking my satellite dish orientation.

What caused the problem? Sun-spots? Tell us, please.

  1. Another reason to have NESN available outside New England. Lucky for me I had XM available.

  1. I don't know about the 7th inning. I'm at UMass and didn't get NESN back until at least an hour after the game was over. Maybe that has something to do with UMass, but it shouldn't have happened at all.

  1. The note about NESN being available in HD is not completely correct. NESN HD was blacked out on DirecTV for customers outside of the NESN viewing area (even if you paid for the DirecTV SportsPack (which includes NESN) and the MLB extra innings package).

  1. I love this so-call apology's back-handed plug in parentheses which basically said "If you had HD, you wouldn't have lost the signal". What a bunch of jamokes! I think Hank Steinbreener was involved...WHO'S WITH ME?!

  1. Got the kids up before 6 for an opening day experience. After an hour on the phone, ended up with a supervisor who apparently thought he'd teach this customer a lesson by noisily calculating the credit to which I'd be entitled (after telling me that "shortly" in the DirecTV alternate universe could mean "up to two weeks"). He then told me that he was dividing my $1.60 daily charge for service by the one channel I was upset about, and his supervisor then told me that the resulting 14 cents of credit was a good deal because the guy before me oly got 12 cents.

I'm now up to some dollar credits (a total of many times the original 14 cent offer)

  1. Basically... Having MLB Season Opener in Japan was a mistake to begin with... Then throw in DirecTV delivering the game into our homes... and you have the formula for an Opening Day Disaster.... looking at a BLANK TV SCREEN... I have ESPN 2 and NESN and also pay for all the premium sports package from DirecTV inclduing MLB Season Ticket... So to get up at 5 am and then wait on the phone for 45 minutes for DirecTV Customer Service to tell me they didnt no what the problem was... Opening Day was a BUST!!!!!! Andy in North Carolina

  1. MLB.com did the job so I watched the game on my computer. I can't always rely on Direct TV so I have to fall back on a redundant system. It is like paying for two tickets for yourself to see the same game. Another money making scam for MLB.
I certainly appreciate the business model. When can I expect a refund :>) for the game that was not televised in real time on Direct TV via ESPN2? I know the answer "When hell freezes over"!

  1. I emailed Direct TV and was asked to call them. When I called them their automated message told me that speaking to a representative would cost me $5! I emailed them back and asked them if they were insane --- no reply yet, they must be talking to their psychiatrist...

  1. I live in CO and have DirectTV w/ HD and it was on my DVR no problems no outage. We've had over 20 feet of snow this year up in the rockies and DirectTV rarel goes out. However, the snow here is much drier that the wet stuff I remember from the South Shore of my youth...........We live in a rural area so its either DirectTV or Dish. Dish doesn't have MLB or NFL....
I do think DirectTV should offer some sort of rebate though...or a more thorough explanataion.........

  1. Hey, first time poster long time reader. Great blog you have here gang . Too bad Im a Nats fan I guess.

Anyway, I stumbled upon www.saberscouting.com the other day looking up some college prospects. Looks like it could get big. When I was there I found some other interesting info too. Check it out. Read up on potential future Sox!

  1. Great stuff - We have the Direct DVR -- a botched software update on Saturday had the usual dash-dash shortcut deleting two items off our hard drive instead of one. We lost 5 movies to the glitch before realizing that the dvr was double deleting. When we called to complain and ask what was going on, after a 20 minute wait my wife encountered "it ain't our fault, it's yo fault. Is nuttin we can do, is yo fault" and then the DirectTv customer service rep hung up on my wife.

Then today I get up early to watch the game before work and find that not only has my recording failed, but the satellites are going up and down for ESPN2, Fox News and a few other random channels. Then another software update came down.

  1. What a crock of Sh** from DirecTV!! When I called the rep directed me to 104, the channel where they show like 8 windows of sports programs on one page. There, you could see the action!

Then, around the 6th inning, the message on ESPN@ was no longer "searching satellite" but was a message "DO NOT CALL US>>> WE ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM"

SO, since the ESPN2 feed was being received (it certainly was, because they had it on the 104 sports multiplex channel), and since they could clearly put something on ESPN2 channel (they put up the message DO NOT CALL) why the hell couldn't they figure out how to put the feed on??

People are just getting dumber and deumber and more lazy everyday.

  1. An [well, not so] amazing number of whiners. After all, these all are American baseball fans. You can expect tears if the mustard spoils.

BTW, been a BoSox fan since kidhood back in the 40's and still treasure my autographed photos of Ted Williams, et al. Doesn't require me to be ignorant of technology or have special needs pampering.

If your reception fades in the average rainstorm, guess what? It ain't properly aligned. If you're too cheap [or uninterested] to pop for HD, then, you're only diminishing your own experience. DirecTV is cranking on almost a half-million new subscriptions per quarter based on HD.

  1. Well try this on for size - failing to provide the ESPN2 signal constitutes a lack of service delivery which is a breach of contract on the part of DirecTV. So anybody who thinks they are locked in for a two year agreement, or some part of it can now gracefully exit - and be sure to tell DTV to stick it on your way out the door. This is my plan, NFL sunday ticket or not. I'll just go back to visiting my local sports bar to catch the Pats games. And besides, it seems that over half the Pats games are nationally broadcast anyway so its not such a big deal. A Denver Sox fan is going to make his statement right here.
