Thumbs up on Colon

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff March 3, 2008 09:48 AM

Bartolo Colon threw 42 pitches in his bullpen session, exclusively fastballs with a few changeups mixed in, and approached 90 miles an hour in his velocity with a few pitches, according to pitching coach John Farrell. "For not being on the mound for 3 1/2 weeks, I thought he threw to both sides of the plate, he got through the glove well with good carry. A very good day for him.''

Farrell said Colon will throw another bullpen Wednesday, and the club will re-evaluate at that stage to see what's next. Another bullpen is likely, than at least one session of batting practice. March 15 is a viable target date, Farrell said, for a game appearance. The Sox play the Cincinnati Reds that day at City of Palms Park.

  1. Gee, Mr. Edes, as good a writer as you are, I can't believe you would even type a sentence that says "exclusively " A, but with a little B.

  1. I agree, a strong and healthy Colon makes this deal the sleeper of the off season. He could win a lot of games for us if he's healthy.

  1. "exclusively fastballs with a few changeups mixed in, "

Confusion about the meaning of "exclusively"?

  1. If past history tells us anything, we're going to need 7-8 starters so sign em all up.

  1. Sounds pretty good for this session. Surprising to see him throw at approx 90 mph. Could be an exciting acquisition.

  1. classic hometown comment. ... if colon were in yankee camp trying to resurrect his career, with the same nearly meaningless early results so far, you'd be scoffing and predicting failure.

  1. I sure hope so...How is it we need pitchers AGAIN?
Schill should give them the 8 million back and let us trade coco for some real pitchers.

  1. Unless Colon is pitching at 95 MPH, he is useless.

  1. I have to agree that he will make a great contribution to this years team, if he can lay off the donuts and pizza..... Welcome to the land of Dunkin Donuts, Bartolo!
