Tito the ump

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff March 8, 2008 09:36 AM

As I type this, Terry Francona is standing in the infield, just back of David Pauley, acting as the umpire for this morning's camp game. The Red Sox brought up a bunch of guys from the minor league complex to give a couple pitchers some extra innings. Pauley and Michael Bowden are the starters for the four-inning game.

It's a 9-on-8 game, technically, with the "Red Sox" lacking a DH. "Boston" has the full complement of players, including left fielder Chris Carter, who is the only player doing double duty in the camp game and against the Marlins later today.

Playing in the camp game are: Jonathan Van Every, Keith Ginter, George Kottaras, Carter, Brandon Moss, Jeff Bailey, Argenis Diaz, Gil Velasquez, and Tony Granadillo for "Boston" and Bubba Bell, Jeff Natale, Lars Anderson, Dusty Brown, Jeff Corsaletti, Chad Spann, Ryan Khoury, and Mickey Hall.

Somehow four straight hits (after one out) spelled the end of the top of the first inning just now. Not exactly a typical game...
