  1. I wasn't even born in '86, and I'm not sure Buckner sans SWAT Escort is entirely appropriate...

  1. Billy who!?!?

    No more goat.
    Sox moved on.
    I've moved on.

Time for all the fans to move on.
Let's not rehash ancient history, but rather relish recent history,
and bask in the dreams of what's ahead.

    Go Sox!!!

  1. Get the line out that says legendary goat !! Give the guy a break, he's been hearing this for twenty years........very low brow !!

  1. I think that is great, hopefully he is cheered and not jeered. I watched that game, and coach's decision is what lost it

  1. Welcome Home, Billy! Welcome Home! I couldn't be happier...

  1. What a fabulous idea! Yet another great move by the Red Sox brain trust!
Welcome back, Bill...you didn't deserve the last 22 years of abuse...

  1. We win in 2004 and then have great champions throw out the first pitch: Seymour, Bruschi, Russell, and Orr. Now we win in 2007 and have a goat who ruined many expectations. I don't think Buckner deserves this as it should be reserved for champions. Maybe losing Dr. Charles Steinberg was a bigger deal than we thought.

  1. They should have brought Bucky Bleepen Dent along with him to complete the purge

  1. You got to be kidding me ! Are they trying to jinx the whole season already. He is still not forgiven around here .

  1. This first pitch will be a great moment in Boston sports history. Bill Buckner was a great player who was under-appreciated and scape-goated because of one play. The ownership is to be commended to invite Buckner back and the classy Boston fans will surely show their belated appreciation.

  1. it's about time.

I'm sick and tired of Buckner being blammed for losing the 86 world series. He will get the huge ovation he's deserved for a very long time. I'm glad he agreed to do it.

maybe next year Dan Duquette can throw out the 1st pitch.

  1. It's been over twenty years since the incident, the fans should show him some respect and cheer. One play tarnished his whole career; it is time for the fans to let it go.

  1. Heaven Help Us.....Season is now cursed.....

  1. It's about time. Give this guy a break. We wouldn't have been in the World Series if it wasn't for him anyway. I will be cheering his return.

  1. And the pitch goes between his legs!!!

(Just kidding....BB didn't cost us that Series...welcome back, Bill!)

  1. nothing to forgive. the entire team collapsed. welcome back billy buck.

  1. Come on! Not one but TWO World Series Rings later,.... I think we should all move on. I have. All is forgiven. It was not your fault, but the play was a lasting symbol of many years of "ooh soo close". Come on back Billy B. Some one give that guy a coaching job!

  1. If the Varitek has any sense of humor at all, he'll let the throw go between his legs.

  1. I watched that entire 1986 season, and it's because of Bill Buckner that the Sox made it to the Series in the first place. He had a great year and he should never have gotten the abuse that was heaped on him from Sox fans for that error. If you want to blame someone, try McNamara who should have lifted the hobbled Buckner for Dave Stapleton. I think it's great idea to have Buckner throw out the first pitch. Welcome back, Buck.

    BOOOOO Him off the field.

  1. I totally agree with the comment by JoAnn, get rid of the reference to "legendary goat"--show a little class and humanity. As someone else wrote, Buckner was one player on a TEAM! Remember? Plus, he was an excellent hitter for most of his career.

Posted by TBoston April 8, 08 01:14 PM
  1. If they finish 10 games out I will know who to blame. A better choice would have been the "dude" guy from the Bud Lite commercials.

Posted by Al Bessemer April 8, 08 01:15 PM
  1. Bill had an incredible career except for that infamous error. I never blamed him and I respect his talents and his incredible will to play despite his numerous injuries. Bill was old school. Players now would not play with the injuries that Bill had.

  1. Good choice. I love it. It's time for healing. If I were there, i would cheer my fool head off for the guy.

  1. HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOW WILL ALL YOU PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THE BALL GOES THROUGH YOUK'S LEGS TODAY?????????

just wondering ... i personally cannot wait... will be so funny

Posted by bostonlou April 8, 08 01:33 PM
  1. This is terrible. People forget that because of Buckner, all of NE was mentally tortured for 18 years. What a loser. This is the same guy who still signs pictures of the ball going through his legs for money. Anyone who cheers him is either too young to remember what happened, or a complete loser themself.

    Posted by Dan G April 8, 08 01:37 PM
  1. Those who still haven't forgiven Buckner must have been in a coma the past five years.

Give the guy a break, folks. He deserves forgiveness. Those who cannot forgive him are not true Sox fans and will not be satisfied until the Sox win the World Series ever year for the next twenty.

    Posted by Geoff T. April 8, 08 01:46 PM
  1. Get a grip people! The Red Sox lost in 86 because the manager was stupid enough to put Buckner on the field in the ninth (he hadn't played then the entire playoffs). The game was already tied at that point and they STILL had a chance to win it the next day. You are the most pathetic Red Sox fans ever if you can't get this through your thick heads and give the man a break after 20 years and 2 World Series wins. No wonder the rest of the country hates us...

I for one will give a standing ovation to a class act and great former player.

    Posted by Tom A April 8, 08 01:52 PM
  1. I think this is great!!! Buckner was by no means the reason we lost game 6 in 1986. Anybody who would boo him now has no idea what he meant to that team. He was one of the big reasons we even made it to the World Series that year. Pitching and the manager trying to be a nice guy cost us that game - not Buckner.

  1. Good. He deserves it, the mental anguish he has lived with for over 20 years is enough suffering for any man. It's time to heal all wounds and let bygones be bygones

Posted by Jim April 8, 08 02:09 PM
  1. Welcome Back Bill Buckner, Gedman was the real goat. Now is there room for Grady Little?

Posted by Griff April 8, 08 02:14 PM
  1. i was a clubhouse attendant in 86 and 87. when the sox released buckner during the 87 i carried his bags out to his car. he was a class act.i just hope they never have bob stanley throw out the first pitch because i blame him.

Posted by clubbie April 8, 08 02:50 PM
  1. I think it's great - -Billy Buck gets a bad rap...the bullpen lost that game, never should have let those stinking Mutts on the bases.

Posted by cobi wan April 8, 08 02:52 PM
  1. If you want to "blame" a player, there's plenty of others like Stanley, Schiraldi, etc. It's jsut that one play that is burned into our memories.

Let it go. If nothing, '86 made 2004 and 2007 that much sweeter.

Posted by Joe April 8, 08 02:59 PM
  1. Kudos to the Red Sox for bringing back Bill Buckner.............He did not deserve the torment he received for the last 22 years.............He is a CLASS ACT and a throwback to what a player should strive to be................

    WELCOME BACK OL SCRAP IRON........

    WE ALWAYS LOVED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
