Emergency starter David Pauley has been staked to a 1-0 lead courtesy of Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff homer on a 2-2 pitch from Jered Weaver. The ball went into the Angels' bullpen over the Boston.com (cheap plug) sign.

It's precisely the type of uppercut swing the Red Sox believe Ellsbury can produce, with which he can drive the ball a long way.

Also in the first, Dustin Pedroia, who followed the homer with a double, extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Pedroia was erased on a fielder's choice when he got caught between second and third on David Ortiz's grounder, which deflected off Weaver and went to shortstop Maicer Izturis, who made a heads-up play to get Pedroia.

The Sox stranded two runners in the first.
