Going yard against aces

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff April 6, 2008 02:35 PM

TORONTO - Both aces are certainly having problem with the long ball today.

Jason Varitek has stroked a home run to straightaway center off Roy Halladay in the fifth tying the game, 2-2. It came on a 2-0 pitch. Last season, Halladay held opponents to a .179 average when falling behind, 2-0, on the count. When he fell behind to 3-0, opponents batted .143.

Halladay, who led the majors last season with seven complete games, also has been taken deep by Jacoby Ellsbury.

Beckett allowed a two-run homer to Vernon Wells in the fourth.
