Heading home

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 8, 2008 03:09 PM

He might have hesitated a bit to watch his long fly ball, but he still made it home.

Manny Ramirez delivered a triple to the triangle that landed past the reach of Brandon Inge. He never stopped as he rounded second base, sliding in to third base head first. But second baseman Placido Polanco threw the ball toward third, and it skidded past third baseman Miguel Cabrera and into the Tigers dugout.

It took Ramirez a second, but seeing it was in the dugout, he hopped up and jogged home.

That was Polanco's first error since July 1, 2006, a stretch of 186 games. That's the major league record for second basemen.

Clearly things are not going well for the Tigers.
