Honoring Marzano
The Sox will have a moment of silence in memory or John Marzano before tonight's game. Marzano, the Sox first round pick in 1984, reportedly fell down a flight of stairs after a heart attack. He was 45.
They also issued the following statement:
The Boston Red Sox organization joins all of major league baseball in mourning today's passing of John Marzano. It is a great loss.
John was selected by the red Soc in the first round of the June 1984 amateur draft and made his major league debut with Boston in 1987. He spent all or parts of the next six seasons with the Red Sox and was a valuable contributor to the club on and off the field. Over the last few years, John covered a number of Red Sox games in his role as a television, radio and internet journalist. The same preparation and engaging personality that marked his time as a player in Boston carried over to his duties with the media.
We express our heartfelt sympathies to John's family sand friends at this very difficult time.
Marzano was in his second season as an on-air personality with MLB.com and Major League baseball said in its release that it plans to immediately establish an internship program in Marzano's memory.
Dinn Mann, MLB.com's executive vice president of content, said "Words cannot describe how sorry we are to have lost Jon's inspiring presence, but rest assured, his spirit and legacy will always influence us."
Marzano was a South Philadelphia native and a member of the Temple Hall of Fame. No funeral plans were mentioned. Marzano will leave behind his wife Terri, two daughters Dominique and Danielle and two grandchildren.
