Long gone
Well, at least Joe Girardi didn't have any choice about that one.
After his controversial decision to allow Mike Mussina to pitch to Manny Ramirez last Saturday, which resulted in a two-run double, Ramirez just hit a solo home run off Mussina. It was his fourth home run of the season, on a 3-1 pitch.
That gives Ramirez 494 career home runs, passing Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for sole possession of 24th place on the all-time list. It's his 54th against the Yankees and his eighth off Mussina.
It's now 1-0, Red Sox.
