The Tigers win!

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff April 9, 2008 10:50 PM

The Tigers have won their first game, 7-2.

Not much to write about on the Sox side except J.D. Drew extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

All three pitchers who are eligible to be designated for assignment when Mike Timlin returns to the active roster as early as tomorrow, all pitched tonight:

Dave Aardsma: 1-2/3 innings, 2 walks, 1 strikeout.

Bryan Corey: 1/3rd inning, 2 hits and 2 runs.

Javier Lopez: 2/3 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 home run.

Lopez allowed a solo homer to Carlos Guillen in the top of the ninth.

The Sox loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Tigers closer Todd Jones got Kevin Youkilis to pop out to shortstop Edgar Renteria in short left field.

  1. Bottom of the fourth, two on, nobody out, Sox down 4-2, and #9 hitter Julio Lugo is up. Perfect place to have him sacrifice the runners over for the top of the order, right? Especially in light of the fact that both Dustin Pedroia AND Kevin Youkilis are double play candidates, so wouldn't it be better to have the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd, out of force situations?

So, what does Lugo do? He smacks a shot literally to the third base bag (way to go the other way, Julio), where the Tigers turned an easy DP (and nearly had a triple play).

End of rally...and basically, the end of the Sox last night.

Why are the Red Sox so dead set against moving the runners up...especially with a guy like Lugo at the plate? It makes NO baseball sense.
