Ugly play

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 27, 2008 02:29 PM

So that play got both an E-1 and an E-9, allowing Jason Bartlett to make it all the way home on a pick-off throw to first base by Josh Beckett.

Beckett missed completely on the throw, with the ball rolling all the way to the Rays bullpen mound (which is on the field, in foul territory). J.D. Drew then compounded the problem by heaving the ball back in toward the infield, where there was no one waiting to get the relay. The ball simply rolled toward home plate, as Bartlett scored the first run for the Rays.

Beckett then walked Akinori Iwamura, but got Carl Crawford swinging. That's seven strikeouts, which is already a season-high in strikeouts for the righthander.

It's 1-0, Rays.
