Welcomes to the field

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 8, 2008 01:28 PM

So all the old stars just walked in with their respective trophies. Johnny Bucyk held the Stanley Cup, while Danny Ainge, Tedy Bruschi, and Curtis Leskanic brought in the trophies from their sports.

Bill Russell and Bruschi definitely got the biggest ovations.

There was a comical moment. As the Red Sox were unfurling the World Series banners, all went well for the first five, through 1918. Then they let go of a giant 2004 banner, which covered the other five and extended almost all of the way along the Green Monster. But when it came time for the 2007 version, a giant gust of wind picked up the banner. The people holding it down scrambled to get hold of it, so fans could actually see the words "2007 World Series champions." It took quite a bit for them to catch it and get it down.

As the Red Sox were going through introductions, they wen through the catchers, finishing with Doug Mirabelli. Mirabelli, wearing a black shirt and dark coat, rather than the uniforms worn by the rest, got a big ovation, turned and saluted the crowd. He then got his ring, and walked back into the dugout, instead of going to stand in the infield with the other members of the current Red Sox.

  1. Did Dice-K get his ring? I didn't see him during the ceremony.

  1. How can anyone ask who Curtis Leskanic is? He left his arm on the field for the Sox during the '04 ALCS. You have access to Google, don't you? Do a little research before asking something so uninformed.

I was surprised how short Leskanic looked, tho. He seems to have lost a few inches along with the power in his pitching arm.
