Abe Alvarez released
One-time Red Sox front-line prospect Abe Alvarez was released by the Red Sox yesterday, the Providence Journal reported. The lefthander was at Triple-A Pawtucket and had been moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen this year. He had a 6.46 ERA in 13 games.
In four career appearances with the Red Sox (the most notable a 2004 spot start), Alvarez had a 4.76 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.

I was at that 2004 spot start when alvarez pitched against the Baltimore Orioles. Abe pitched a great game and the red sox took the game easily....wasn't he partially blind in one of his eyes?
Uhhh... I was watching that game in 2004 on TV and Abe pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 runs. The Sox definately lost that game. Maybe you're the one who's partially blind? Sorry, kidding, just couldn't help myself! I always wondered what happened to this dude. I remember he was a huge prospect. I guess it just goes to show that prospects don't always work out. I'm sure some other team will take a flyer on him. He is a lefty, after all.
Dan....hate to burst your bubble.....but the Sox lost that game 8-3
At least he got a ring out of it
Dan's memory is a little faulty. I was at that game too and Abe got smoked for at least 4 earned runs and the Sox lost the game. It was the last game I went to, so I remember it well.
Dan, check your fact. According to every source I can find, he gave up 5 earned runs in five innings and took the loss.
If he stayed home and kept his focus and strengthened his arm to be able to throw, um, maybe 85, he would still have a job... too many Saturday nights for him at McFaddens chasing baby mama drama bartenders... at least he got a ring though.
