Boras waiting on Wilkerson

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 4, 2008 04:01 PM

As of this afternoon, agent Scott Boras had not heard of what might happen with client Brad Wilkerson, the outfielder designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners last week.

Boras said Wilkerson cleared waivers and was aware there were teams, including Boston, that were looking to fill a roster spot.

Boras acknowledged the Red Sox were very interested in Wilkerson in the offseason.

"I'm sure there are teams out there that need a hitter, and Brad could certainly fill the bill. He was a little nicked up out of spring training and it took him a while to get going, but he was starting to hit. The Mariners just decided to go with some younger players," Boras said.

The Sox will have a roster vacancy with Brandon Moss undergoing an appendectomy Friday night. Both Alex Cora and Sean Casey aren't far away from returning, so the Sox may just do some patchwork until then. But if they feel they need a more long-term answer, Wilkerson could be an option.

  1. Never felt the Mariner love for Wilkerson. At our house, we took away the "R" in his name, so he was just known as BAD Wilkerson. Too little too late , big fellah. Hope you catch on in Boston, per the rumour mill.
