Colon throws in extended spring
DETROIT -- Bartolo Colon threw two innings in extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla., today. He threw 19 pitches during the game, then threw another 16 pitches in a bullpen session. He was only scheduled to pitch two innings, in which he gave up a hit and got a strikeout.
Colon is expected to rejoin the team in Detroit this week. As we reported on Friday, Colon will be re-evaluated by the major league training staff, then will head to Pawtucket for a start on Saturday. It's not yet known how many starts he will need at the minor league level, but the plan is to build up his pitches and innings so he can make a start for the Red Sox in the near future.

Why only 19 pitches? Was he on an innings count? I guess it's good that he made it through two innings on only 19 pitches, but wouldn't it have been better to throw the 35 pitches in a game situation rather than half in the bullpen?
He is going to join the ML team to be evaluated by the major league training staff...
Amalie wasn't misinformed you just didn't read correctly, if you had you would have seen this - "...then will head to Pawtucket for a start on Saturday. It's not yet known how many starts he will need at the minor league level, but the plan is to build up his pitches and innings so he can make a start for the Red Sox in the near future."
Any reports on how Colon looks? Has he dropped any of the weight that he came to camp with? An update along this front tomorrow when he joins the big-league club (to be evaluated, not to play) would be very helpful. Thanks,
I know that their's no proof yet, but I'm optomistic. Their's a lot to be said for someone who used to being an ace and now has everyone telling him he can't. Watch out! If this guy can even get back to 70% of what he was. Behind Beckett, Dice K, and Lester.. This rotation gets scary good! If he doesn't, it was worth a shot. Hopefully a good bullpen fill.
Those of us who remember the ups and downs with Ramon Martinez and Bret Saberhagen in the late 90s can be forgiven for having any optimism that Mr. Colon will appear in more than one or two games in Fenway. He's not been injured in the same fashion as these two, but the same fragility is apparently there: each time he picks up a ball will be followed shortly thereafter by some setback.
Let's talk in mid-July. Fortunately, this team is far more exciting than Sabes' Sox, so we don't have to count on anything from Bartolo.
What it says is that he's going to join the team to BE EVALUATED by the major league team, and then head to Pawtucket to build up pitch count. Getting him hurt at this point is pointless. It's the right thing to do, besides, they aren't dying for starting pitching.
