Dice-K begins strength program

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 31, 2008 04:50 PM

BALTIMORE - Daisuke Matsuzaka has begun his shoulder strengthening program, which he hopes will get him back in business by the time he comes off the DL June 14.

The Sox starter seemed to feel guilty that he was on the DL and not contributing.

"Even though I might feel OK, the club has told me to rest up,'' he said. "I do feel bad being the only one getting rest on this team...dwelling on that isn't going to help me heal. I'm going to treat this as a minicamp."

  1. Good God, the cultural guilt is so silly.

  1. That's what I like about Dice-K. He's a considerate guy and a great teammate. I hope that when he comes back from the DL, he can continue his winning streak...

  1. Perhaps but it's kind of refreshing actually.

  1. Silly, perhaps, in the sense that 99% of today's players feel entitled to coddling and pampering inspite of their inflated salaries.

But DICEK is refreshing. Here's a guy who understands the value of his price tag and humbly accepts the fact that the DL is not a fair return.

  1. Dice K is his own worse enemy..He pushes himself too hard and needs to understand here it is only 4 days rest between starts, and you have to throw harder because the hitters are better and stronger...This 3 week lay off can do him some good and preserve him for the long season...He has great stuff, just needs to pull back on the reins.

  1. We need to respect the Japanese culture in which people feel shame in situations like this. The last thing we need to do is seek to impose our sensibilities on Dice K. He'll be better when he's better.
