Dice-K to be examined Friday

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 28, 2008 09:26 PM

SEATTLE - Daisuke Matsuzaka will likely accompany the team to Baltimore tonight and then shoot off to to Boston Friday to visit with team physician Dr. Thomas Gill and also be given a precautionary MRI in his ailing right shoulder.

Matsuzaka under went some baseline strength tests yesterday on his right shoulder and Terry Francona indicated that Matsuzaka tested well in comparison to the tests he had taken in spring training. The Sox are usually very cautious in such matters and a good bet would be that Matsuzaka would miss his next start and that someone would make his start scheduled for next Tuesday. The Red Sox have listed TBA for Monday which could be be Justin Masterson (who would be on normal rest) or Clay Buchholz.

  1. It was a right judgment, I think, that Terry Francona decided to retire Daisuke Matsuzaka yesterday. As a Japanese fan of Dice-K, I remember that he complained a similar disorder two or three years after he became a member of Seibu Lions in Japan. It was an accident at the end of the regular season. In the next game, he dared to throw, and the result was no good. Matsuzaka himself, certainly, remembers this. The season is long. For the Sox and Matsuzaka himself, it would be best that he should undergo a thorough exam, and he "would miss his next start and someone would make his start scheduled for next Tuesday."
