Hansen struggles

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 5, 2008 09:55 PM

Though Craig Hansen looked great coming out in the sixth inning in relief of Daisuke Matsuzaka -- he had a 1-2-3 inning, and shattered Ivan Rodriguez's bat -- he has labored in the seventh. He gave up two singles to lead off the inning, then was helped by a double play ball from Magglio Ordonez.

But he walked Miguel Cabrera, leaving him men on first and third with two outs. He went to 3-1 on Gary Sheffield, before adding another walk to the Red Sox total. That gave Matt Joyce -- just up today from the minors -- a chance with the bases loaded. Hideki Okajima relieved him.

Joyce, however, was pulled for Marcus Thames, who sent a single toward Manny Ramirez in left field. That scored both Placido Polanco and Cabrera. That means that Okajima has now allowed eight of his 11 inherited runners to score.

It's 5-3.
