Lester pitches no-hitter against Royals

Posted by Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff May 19, 2008 09:30 PM

With the Fenway Park faithful all on their feet, Jon Lester struck out Kansas City's Alberto Callaspo to seal his first career no-hitter. It was the ninth strikeout of the night for the young lefthander.

He became the first Red Sox pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Clay Buchholz last Sept. 1 and the first Boston southpaw since Mel Parnell in July of 1956.

  1. Well, your black magic didn't work THIS time, Nancy, but let's be a little more mindful of the power of baseball voodoo in the future.

  1. I am so pleased that this has happened. It is a great accomplishment and should provide Lester with something to fall back on for confidence. What a wonderful time for New England Sports.

  1. If my googling is as good as I think it is, it appears that Jason Varitek has just tied Ray Schalk (who retired in 1929!) as the all-time leader in No-Hitters CAUGHT, with FOUR (4)! (Nomo, Lowe, Buckholz, Lester) That's pretty damn impressive!!!

  1. If courage and character were the sole prerequisites for Cooperstown, Jon Lester would already be a first-ballot inductee.

Great, great job by a great, great man.

    Congratulations, Lefty!!

  1. My 6 yr old is so spoiled... he has seen
    the Sox get

    2 world series rings
2 no hitters in the last 2 yrs.

My boy has no idea what his mom and dad have endured all of their
lives, prior to the '04 season.

What a great time to love the Sox!

  1. Spectacular game by Lester...he seemed to get BETTER as he went...that 8th inning was absolutely dominating (two K's and the fly out).

Still, there's an element of luck in throwing a no hitter. For example, the best game I ever saw pitched in my lifetime (and I started watching baseball more than 40 years ago) was a ONE hitter by Pedro Martinez. Against the Yankees. The only guy who touched him all night was Chile Davis who stuck his bat out on a 97mph heater and managed to get perfect wood on it...the ball sailing out of the park for a solo homer. Only Chuck Knoblach (hit by pitch) got on base besides Davis, and he was promptly picked off.

Martinez was a man among boys that night...struck out 17, and walked NO ONE, if I remember correctly...and that was one tough Yankee lineup...in Yankee Stadium yet.

  1. By the way, during last night's later innings, both Sox radio announcers (Joe Castiglione & Dave O'Brien) repeatedly referred to the potential no-hitter. I think the spirit of the superstition is that one can't talk about it/tell the pitcher himself, so the players can't mention it to the pitcher.

(Although Lester said he talked to people in the dugout cause not doing so just makes him more nervous.) So lighten up, folks! :-)
