Lugo off the hook

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 9, 2008 10:02 PM

MINNEAPOLIS - Julio Lugo's 11th error is no longer a factor as the Sox have taken a 6-5 lead with four runs in the fifth.

Dustin Pedroia started thinbgs off by beating out an infield hit to shortstop. After David ortiz walked, Manny Ramirez singled to center loading the bases. Mike Lowell stroked one of his patented doubles to left-center as two runs scored. After Kevin Youkilis' ground ball out to second scored the third run, a wild pitch allowed Lowell to score.

  1. Watching Delmon Young indicate, in no uncertain terms, that he wanted no part of the Metrodome's well-padded left-field wall...even with men on base...makes me realize why Tampa Bay was more than happy to unload a guy who finished second in last year's Rookie of the Year voting.

  1. He is not off the hook. This should be a 3 run lead.

  1. It's still a "factor," Nick, as without the Lugo error, the Sox would be up 6-3 right now, a lot more comfortable than 6-5.

  1. Lugo's error resulted in 2 runs scored. We lose by one run. How is the error no longer a factor?

  1. Maybe if we didn't have 2 unearned runs caused by the worst Red Sox shortstop since Don Buddin Paps wouldn't have had a blown save. And the previous blown save should be also be charged to Lugo.11errors in 38 games.I don't think Theo should be given a free pass on signing Lugo to an outrageous 4 year deal.

  1. Errors are ALWAYS a factor. They add to the pitch count to get out of the inning.
