Masterson, Colon to pitch
The Red Sox have announced the starters for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, against the Kansas City Royals. Justin Masterson will be brought up on Tuesday, swapped with Chris Smith (who came up today). Then Masterson will return to the minors after the game, and Bartolo Colon will come up to the big league club and will pitch on Wednesday.
That leaves the rotation as follows for this week:
Sunday: Josh Beckett vs. Carlos Villanueva
Monday: Jon Lester vs. Luke Hochevar
Tuesday: Justin Masterson vs. Gil Meche
Wednesday: Bartolo Colon vs. Brett Tomko
Thursday: Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Brian Bannister
Since Masterson's April 24 debut against the Angels, the starter has struggled with Portland. Over his last four starts, he has given up 16 earned runs in just 19 1/3 innings. He has taken the loss in three of those four games.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Colon if he pitches well up with the big club once Clay comes back with the DL.
Don't you want to give us an update on who Chris Smith is???? How he got on the roster in the first place???
SOME MISSING DETAILS?!?
Smith has been with Portland/Pawtucket for a long time now. Soft throwing righty, works quickly, doesn't have any overpowering stuff. Tries to fool batters rather than blow them away. has never been that consistent in the minors. Defintiely not a Major League Pitcher at all.
So who is Chris Smith anyway?
"Soft throwing righty, works quickly, doesn't have any overpowering stuff. Tries to fool batters rather than blow them away"
Sounds like Greg Maddux. And why do they call Smith "The Mayor"? INquiring minds want to know.
Isn't it a given that Buccholz will finish his DL stint and then head to Pawtucket? If the Sox plan to control his MLB inning tally, and if they want him to continue to develop, then (barring injuries to other starters) this seems like the PERFECT time to send him to AAA.
From what I've read, Smith was known as The Mayor because he played in Portland for several seasons. Charlie Zink's was also a Sea Dog for several years and came to be known as The Governor.
They don't call Smith the mayor. Sean Casey is the mayor, he got the nickname either in his first year in the minors because he was so friendly and outgoing, shaking hands with everyone etc. There was a globe article about it in training camp.
BUCHHOLZ TO THE PEN IF COLON EXCILES
Why Masterson if he has struggled so badly of late? Isn't there anyone else?
What exactly does Colon look like when exciling? I want to be prepared :-)
will Bartolo Colon become the redsox Randy Moss?...stay tuned
I thought Craig Smith played basketball for B.C. Wow, he pitches too?! Haha...
Smith throws 92-93, if you call that a soft tossing righty. His main stuff is his off spead pitches. He was in a serious ATV accident and was recovering for 2 years, prior to that was a real prospect. He was a 4th round pick in 2002.
I do believe years ago Chris Smith was a very highly touted prospect that through in the mid 90's, than during one offseason he flipped his dune buggy and destroyed his arm in the process.
>>>>> "........ IF COLON EXCILES........"
Well JISPI, I think that Bartolo will stay in the rotation as long as he is healthy, whether he "EXCILES" or not (whatever that means). I expect them to keep Clay in Pawtucket for a month or more, regardless.
Smith's nickname apparently is Dune Buggy because he broke an arm in an ATV accident I think the year after his first year in the minors. He also has had numerous other injuries, and some surgery, which slowed his development. This year his fastball was clocked between 88 and 92 MPH, so he is a little more than a soft tosser. He has exceptional control. He was converted to a relief pitcher this year and has done very well, with a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings.
