Rain delay

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 16, 2008 06:48 PM

We're now in a rain delay here at Fenway Park. It's pouring, though the Red Sox just told us that the rain might be moving out around 7 p.m. I have to say that I don't quite believe that, but then again I'm not exactly a meteorologist.

We've got lineups, too. Sorry about the delay.

2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
7. J.D. Drew, RF
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Julio Lugo, SS

Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP

Brewers

1. Rickie Weeks, 2B
2. Mike Cameron, CF
3. Ryan Braun, LF
4. Prince Fielder, 1B
5. Corey Hart, RF
6. J.J. Hardy, SS
7. Joe Dillon, DH

  1. Amalie, for those of us close enough, will you tell us if/when the grounds crew starts to take the tarp off of the field?

  1. At some point the local media has to report on the Red Sox poor habit of making fans come to a game that they have to see from weather reports. Maybe the Sox ownership will someday come to the realization that bleeding the fan base dry is not always the best policy. It's disappointing to read other city's media outlets point out when teams drag out game cancellations but the Globe & othersin Boston ignore.

  1. AMEN, Tom. This is a woefully underreported story. When the Sox are questioned, they give some PR answer about wanting to give fans every chance to see the game or whatever. And the sports journos are too cozy with the clubs to make an issue out of it. I'd actually respect the Sox more if they came right out and said "We're in this for the TV money. It's about the TV audience, not the people who pay to come to the game. That's the deal."

Think of any other event that would deliberately inconvenience 35,000 people for hours, solely in the name of money, and it would lead the news.
