Red Sox take the lead, 5-0
J.D. Drew scored in the third inning to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Drew singled, advanced to third on Jason Varitek's single and crossed the plate when Julio Lugo hit into a double play.
Royals starter Luke Hochevar, pitching for the first time in Fenway Park, got into further trouble in struggling to get the third out. He gave up a triple to Jacoby Ellsbury and walked Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz, which brought Manny Ramirez to the plate. With a full count, Ramirez waged a battle with Hochevar that lasted nine pitches before Ramirez walked, plating Ellsbury.
Two more runs scored on a rare error by second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, who mishandled Mike Lowell's popup. Kevin Youkilis drove in Ramirez with a double to cap the five-run rally.
