Rizzo diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 16, 2008 07:30 PM

The Red Sox just released a statement about one of their prospects, Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo had been playing with Single A Greenville this season, after being drafted in the sixth round in 2007.

Rizzo was diagnosed with Limited Stage Classical Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He's currently being treated as an outpatient at Massachusetts General Hospital. He will return to his home in Miami in the next few days to continue treatment. According to the statement, "he has an excellent chance of cure and complete recovery." The treatment is expected to take six to eight months.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony and his family at this very difficult time,” general manager Theo Epstein said in a statement. “We are optimistic about his recovery and look forward to the day he can return to the playing field.”

  1. Ant,

Your Mom sent this to me over the weekend and it sure looks like alot of people out there are rotten for you as always. As I said to you over the weekend, if a guy like Jon Lester can bring your name up in an interview at the height of his career you must also be special to him. He has you in his hart and understands what you are going to have to do over the next seven months. So as you can see you need to be an example to others as everyone is looking at you once again.
My little Max is not going to let up on you and I beleave this is going to be your biggest problem.LOL. So Ant do what you do best and WINNNNN.

    Love ya,
    One Crazy Guy

  1. Anthony played in his first game since being diagnosed with cancer in Ft. Myers on Oct. 9th. and again on Oct. 10th. He went 2 for 4 with a double (just a few feet short of an opposit field home run) and a single that nearly took the pitchers head off. He's bigger and stronger than ever and in complete remission. He has his last chemo-theropy treatment on Oct. 14th and will be back 100+ percent for spring trainning. Keep an eye on him next season folks. You'll be plesently surprised. The determination and the love of the game he has is going to get him playing in the major leagues faster than imagined. He's a man on fire.
