So long, Julian
The Red Sox activated first baseman Sean Casey today from the disabled list. To make room for Casey, the team designated pitcher Julian Tavarez for assignment. The team now has 10 days to either work out a trade for Tavarez or grant him his outright release.
As of yesterday, the Sox had still been talking with the Rockies about a deal for Tavarez, who is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA after he allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings last night.

Tavarez DFA'd? Oh no! hahaha.....bye, bye
VERY DUMB MOVE!!!
Trade the guy for something, anything, extra BP balls and bats if you must. The guy can still pitch if he could get some steady work in. It is very hard for a guy who throws with as much movement as he does to stay sharp. He will never be an elite pitcher but he has some asset value and he can be a 5th starter or long reliever for a National League team.
Cora more valuable than Lowrie?
Timlin considered valuable?
Julian was a big factor in the Sox getting such a big lead in the AL East last season, he did everything that this team asked him to do, alot of times to his detriment.
Good luck to Julian, I don't know of anyone more entertaining to watch play baseball!
Can Julio and Timlin go with him??? Maybe they can all go hang out by the ol'school yard?
Good move. He was a wasted roster spot anyways.
Bring up Masterson. Let him get his feet wet.
So who relaces Tavares...I say put Wakefield back in the pen! We are in trouble with our middle-relief arms!
I guess it's the inevitable business side of baseball, but I hate to see Tavarez leave. I was dead set against it when they picked him up a couple of years ago (I thought he was a loose cannon & over-rated), but I was 100% wrong on the guy. He turned out to be a decent player, and his flexibility, moving from starter to bullpen, was a big plus.
I'll always remember those bowling throws to first base. The guy is a real character in an age of corporate robot sameness.
Finally! I mean the guy has been sub-par statistically for years and kind of an overall jerk. Good riddance - make room for the kids!
I wouldn't have minded seeing Hansen go back down to Pawtucket, but it's been pretty clear that Tavarez is the odd man out this year. The Sox seem to have more depth in the rotation than in previous years, with Masterson, Pauley and Colon now waiting in the wings behind the five regulars. And Kyle Snyder is toiling in Pawtucket and can easily fill the long man's role if the need arises. I wonder why Timlin was not the choice though. He's pitched much worse, much more often, than Tavarez this season. I hope this doesn't lead to an episode with Manny.
I refuse to bash Julian. Was he the reason why they won the World Series? Of course not. But he certainly helped.
I hope they can orchestrate a trade to Colorado for a prospect.
Why? He's been a whole lot better than Timlin! It's time for HIM to go bye bye
Tavarez certainly was a stabilizer over the past few years when we needed long middle relief. Buena suerte en Colorado.
Good luck Julian, you were a great guy for our team, hope you find another place to pitch, best of luck.
Finally - what the heck took them SO fricken long!
1st Manny is going to be pissed
I wonder about this. Perhaps the numbers don't lie, but it always struck me that , yes, Tavarez was weak coming out of the pen. However, as a starter, he wasn't half bad. I seem to remember that an awful lot of the losses he was saddled with were more thanks to lousy offense in spite of decent-to-good pitching from him. He's also one of the few relievers that can come in early in the game and stay for five or six innings if needed. Okay, maybe he won't be good enough to last five or six innings, but at least there's a CHANCE Tavarez can do it. Sure as hell you can't leave Oki or Paps out there for five or six innings!
Perhaps I'm just gunshy. I remember 2005 all too well when everyone thought the Sox had abundant pitching...only to learn fast that injuries can reverse that in a hurry.
This was a long time coming... Sox should sweeten the pie, and add a couple of more, like Tilman and Lugo...
It's about freaking time
he filled a niche for a number of years, some decisions like this are tough, we will miss his color. what should we do with Timlin?
About time!! Have been wondering how long the Red Sox would hang on to this mediocre pitcher who consistently gives up hits and runs in clutch situations..Starting pitchers get charged with earned runs because he comes in and doesn't get the outs when needed..
Personally I'll miss Julian and his nads of steel. I can't understand why Tito only used him one inning at a time. Maybe there's an injury we don't know about? Maybe this means Craig Hansen is ready for another shot at the show?
Best wishes Julian, especially if you land with the Rockies.
hate to see the pitching leave
SEE YA BYE!!!!!! About time!!
I like him even though he's crazy. It's always good to have that versatile dude who can go long relief or do a spot start when needed. Do you think this signifies a promotion for Bartolo "Cool Water" Colon and a move to the bullpen for Clay?
Huh? Why? He's pitching fine, at least par for the course for him....this makes no sense to me at all.
thank God
Hasta La Vista, Julian, and don't let the door hitchoo in the Ass on the way out! No more cringing when Julian gets the call. Now we just gotta jettison Timlin, and we got a chance. Bring up a couple hungry, young bunnies from down on the farm.
it's about time
He needed to go, make room for the young
So long, Tavarez
You did eveything the team has asked of you.
You were good.
As long as he is on his way out, package Lugo with him out the door. The Rockies are in need of a short stop (for the short-term)! Haha.
I would like to thank Tavarez for the selfless attitude he had with the Red Sox. He was relegated to mop-up duty and that cant be the best for personal morale. He was a professional and will be missed.
What trade are they alluding to?
the guy was a bum
thank you and good luck.............
Julián Tavárez
From Wikipedia
Julian Carmen Tavárez was born on May 22, 1973 in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and received no formal education. The son of a construction worker living in poverty, Tavárez shined shoes, sold newspapers and helped out at construction sites. He aspired to be a baseball player but contemplated a career in adult films if he had no future in baseball. He sometimes goes by the nickname "El muńeco" (The Doll).
Dumb. He is a valuable pitcher, able to spot start (effectively) or relieve, particularly in garbage time. I don't like this at all.
uhh, I think it`s time to get rid of that other piece of dead wood,.. uhm, let me think,..oh yea Mike Timlin! Granted the guy is cool, but seriously, Mike, "I love ya, but it`s time to play golf". I do not care about prestige, popularity, even chemistry takes a back seat to results. We need producers out in that pen, not icons
SO long, Julian...it was a fun ride (most of the time, anyways)...
This morning, before breakfast even, I wrote : "Dear Theo; Please keep Hansen up and either trade Tavarez or find a graceful way to convince Timlin to retire."
(Dear Mike: I wasn't serious about the second choice, but I thought some menu of choices was the better idea)
God or Theo (they both know one another), has answered resoundingly and we can all say good riddance. No more pointing at infielders to tell them where to throw the ball; no more rolling the ball to first; no more day to day weirdness; no more tossing matches on gasoline. Go mess up some other team, Julian. I would like to send Julio with you.
Go mess up some other team, Julian. I would like to send Julio with you.
I know that Tavarez hasn't been great this year...although he did have his moments...but I still will miss the guy. He is such a team player and is willing to do anything you ask of him. Last year he was a starter, a reliever, and everything else the team asked him to be. I really felt bad for him when he was left off the World Series roster. I wish him luck and hope that he can go to a team that really needs him and he can help them out.
The Red Sox should have designated Timlin for assignment instead. At least Tavarez is entertaining to watch even though both of them are so far over-the-hill as to be useless in middle relief.
Julian deserves to be treated well whatever happens to him. Farewell wherever you fare Julian
It's about time. Julian will be better off as a starter in Colorado. He was never great in Boston and had become way too ineffective this season. Now if we can only dump Lugo somewhere...
WELL. IT IS ABOUT TIME - NOW LET US WORK ON WAKEFIELD TO BE
TRADED TO A NATIONAL LEAGUE TEAM. MAYBE THE GIANTS COULD USE
HIM. THEY SURE NEED SOME PITCHING HELP...........................................
THEO: GREAT JOB - I AM SURE DENNIS DRINKWATER IS VERY HAPPY....
DENNIS AND I GO WAY BACK-------------GIANT GLASS COMPANY..................
Doesn't seem like the smartest move, but w/ aardsma (however you spell it) for long relief who knows.
THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this move. Casey was hot, tavarez is too inconsistent
I think this is a big mistake. I think there's definitely a role for Tavarez on the team!
Tavarez!?! Why not Timlin!
Tavarez is good more than 1/2 of the time, and can go the distance if needed. Timlin has been nothing but a thorn in the Red Sox side for too long.
So long Julian. This is one Red Sox fan that appreciated you.
I will miss Yo Yo! He's been good for the Sox.
I think it's a mistake! I seriously feel that Timlin will hurt the team as an active player. Offer him a nice job with the bullpen staff and let him retire with some dignity.
I know, lefthanders are harder to come by ... but someone please explain the facination Red Sox management apparently has with Javier Lopez. I would kept Tavarez and DFA's Lopez. Tavarez has been a good, not great mind you, but good resource since he can also spot start. Arguably his best work in a Red Sox uni was when he was pressed into the rotation last year.
Hes burnt out. The Sox killed his arm last year between spot-starting and long relief on all sorts of days. Timlin should be next. He just doesn't have "it", but that's fine. He's got 2 rings and a place to stay when he's in Beantown.
ya know, i never liked JT the way we tend to like players like Youk, Dustin, Pap, etc., but I did appreciate what seemed like genuine enthusiasm for his work. He did fill in nicely a lot last year which we shouldn't forget, but time catches up with all.
Thank God!!
This should of happened years ago!!
Should be Manny Carmencita instead!
Julian Tavarez trade new y mets Johan Santana redsox and Pedro Martinez
He was really a pleasant suprise for us, and I hope he isn't dissapointed with his time on the Sox. I wish him luck in the rest of his career.
It should have been Timlin. He was the worst on the staff. But they are not losing much by letting Tavares go. He did provide some emergency spot starts, and got some wins here and there, but didn't do much else. Maybe he'll turn things around for another team like Joel Piniero.
Get two broken bats and a taped ball for Taverez and we'll be ahead of the game.
You can throw in Timlin also.
People have to give this guy his due. I enjoyed him while he was here. Always will to talk and always having fun.
Cheers Julian.
enigmatic
Julian has done yeoman work for the Sox and was part of great teams. In a way sorry to see any change but Sox are all about change and evolution.
I'm going to miss Manny rubbing his head in the dugout.
This really sucks. Julien, if you could read this man, thank you for all you did for the team last season. We could not have become champions without your gutty performances down the stretch.
Always willing and mostly able to do whatever it takes, at any time or place. A spirit of natural grace.
Why don't the Sox dump Delcarmen? The local kid hasn't done much for the Sox since he came to the big leagues. JT at least rolls (or bowls) the ball to first on bunt hits.
Thanks 4 our memories Julian.....You R the best, but it is time to move on and make way Hansen. Go Redman. Bob aka POPPOP
Time to give Bartolo a chance...He knows just as much english as julian
Wow, when it comes to the PawSoX minors coming up this year just let them watch the 2007 tapes of Tavarez getting the outs and shutting it all down for the other team. Julian got the job done baby for the 2007BoSox to get the AL East lead last season. I never saw a pitcher break that much sweat on the mound for his team. His contributions were huge to the ballclub, the requests and us the Rooters. Wicked big Thank You Julian!
Good bye Julian. Sox fans should always appreciate what you did for the team last year, both on and off the field. Every team needs guys like your and I always rooted for you to make the Sox find a role for you. Good luck with your next team.
are you kidding me get old man timlin outta here thats who they should have cut
honestly, this is a stupid thing for the sox to do. yeah tavarez hasnt been anything amazing for us this year, but still, what are we going to get to make up for him? besides lugo, we have the best infield we can possibly ask for. same with our outfield. tavarez has been a problem this year because we are not using him where we need to. he is early relief, there is no way around that. he is one of the best guys we have in our bullpen. and to be honest, i would prefer to have him start over lester. both our considered unreliable starters, but seriously, lester is the most overrrated pitcher in our starting rotation. he gets lucky, every game he has won, is 100% luck. tavarez has always won his game with good pitching, where the opposing team has no idea where the ball is going. tavarez had his rough spots last year, but at least he wasnt a lucky pitcher. every single game he won, he won. that is a lot more can lester can say for himself. if we get rid of tavarez, it is going to be the dumbest mistake the sox can make this year.
He was a great guy to have around. He was an asset tothe ball club. I remember the awesome game he pitched against Atlata last year. I hate to see him go, but if he must, I hope we get something for him.
The one thing I'm left with after hearing the news about JT is RS management must know something about him we don't. I mean, there are several players on the roster that are hurting the team MUCH worse than JT ever could. Ummm, let's see, how about Lugo with over half the teams errors this year. With Lester and Buckholtz having problems perhaps this wasn't the best time to DFA JT. But thats why the boy wonder gets the big bucks.
I'm sorry to see him go. He'll pop up somewhere else. He really bailed the team out of some jams when the starters ended up on the DL. There is no question in my mind he gave 110% whenever he went out there.
Hope he finds a job.
I think the Red Sox are trying to convince themselves they don't need a long reliever, though they have snyder that could do that if they find the need. Timlin has been scary as of late, great guy, but his time has come. If they DFA Timlin nobody will pick him up....at least with Taverez somebody will. Delcarmen will come back around, though the flu seemed to really mess him up. I think Hansen is there to stay. Now if we could figure out a way to ditch lugo, I'd be happy with Lowrie/Cora.
I've read the 70+ posts and I don't think anyone's suggested that Julian WANTS to leave so he can start. In Colorado he'd be able to start which I know he's wanted to do in the past. With our abundence of available SPs he's out of place, also his performance could be somewhat of an issue. I'm glad to see him travel elsewhere as we have a variety of options that I think are better. Hopefully we'll get a decent prospect out of the trade or include Lugo.
HEY MANNY, YOUR NOT PAID 20 SOMETHING MILLION A YEAR TO BE CONSULTED (AMALIE BENJAMIN ARTICLE) ABOUT THE "TRAVISTY" ERR...TRAVARES MOVE. YOU GET MORE DAYS OFF AND BENNY'S THAN PEOPLE GET SICK DAYS...JUST PLAY THE GAME. LET'S SEE HOW YOU ACT NOW THAT HE'S GONE. OR WILL YOU PULL A DISSAPEARING ACT...
So long Hichanic- you would still strike out tanktop on 3 pitches
So long Hichanic- you would still strike out tanktop on 3 pitches
Julian Tavarez is the man. He is a total class act in person and has always taken the time to greet all fans! All one has to do is wait outside of Fenway Park or take a stroll down to a few area shops and restaurants to see. The man comes from a long road and has fought great battles and obstacles to make it in life, let alone in the MLB. The man can't even read or write English or Spanish, but yet has found a way to overcome those obstacles that challenged him early in life and to this day. The man is gifted took it upon himself to learn to speak some basic Japanese, just to make Dice K feel appreciated. If you knew his real story you would be a fan of the man. I think that he belongs in Boston. Any team that he would go to, I would put on my list of support. His personality makes a team better. The Bottom line is that Julian will give you all that he has and does appreciate where he is and how he got here. Unlike the typical athletes of today. God Bless you, Julian! You will always be mi "tio" and "Papi"!
Julian Tavarez did what was asked of him day in and day out and peformed his job for the betterment of his team and not his personal self. Mis-understood and a bit aloof, most definately; but it's guys like Julian who are asked to do what the pretty boys and egomaniac prima donna's refuse to do and will still say thank you for the opportunity to help. Baseball is a game of changes and everydog has his day when it's time to move on. Thank the man for all he has done for the Red Sox and wish him the best, don't berate him you arm chair morons.
ah that sucks, although the little freddy krugger lookin dude scared me.
Best thing JT did for the Sox was to give up the HR to Bellhorn in Game 1 of the '04 Series. I'll never forget him...
Im gonna miss my buddy
I'll miss ya Julian Tavarez
