Sox blow it open

Posted by Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff May 22, 2008 03:58 PM

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell hit his team's second grand slam of the afternoon against the Royals as Boston took an 11-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia aboard, the Royals intentionally walked Manny Ramirez to load the bases.

Lowell's grand slam was the seventh of his career and first since May 19, 2007 versus Atlanta. It marked the first time two different Sox hitters had grand slams in the same game at Fenway since Tony Armas and Bill Buckner in Aug. 1984.

  1. Although Bill Mueller hit 2 grand slams in one game in 2003 (one right handed, one left handed) and Nomar hit 2 grand slams a game in 1999.
