Sox break it open

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 27, 2008 12:00 AM

The Red Sox have scored four runs in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead against Felix Hernandez.

A clutch two-out ground-rule double to left by Dustin Pedroia scored Julio Lugo with the second run. After David Ortiz was walked intentionally, Manny Ramirez lined a single to right field to deliver Pedroia. Mike Lowell reached on an infield single to third despite a great diving stop by Adrian Beltre. Ortiz, however, scored on the play to increase Boston's lead to 4-1.

Hernandez, who was sailing along and pitching lights out except for a solo homer by Ortiz, the allowed an infield single to J.D. Drew, loading the bases. He then walked Jason Varitek plating Ramirez and was then relieved of duty.
