Tigers win
Jonathan Papelbon blew tonight's save, with an assist from Julio Lugo's ninth-inning error, as the Tigers took this one 10-9 on Placido Polanco's broken-bat single over the glove of Lugo.
Polanco raised his arms over his head in celebration as he made it to first base, Edgar Renteria scoring on the play.

The big play (or lack of same) was when Lugo couldn't get an out on a soft hit ball in the grass in front of him. He is a sub standard shortstop and Theo needs to recognize that he is THE weak link in this infield and he needs to be benched or traded. Play the rookies in the infield.
Why is Julio Lugo on this team?
Is it possible to give that blown save to Julio "E-6" Lugo?
"Jonathan Papelbon blew tonight's save, with an assist from Julio Lugo's ninth-inning error,..."
Are you serious? What kind of reporting is this? Papelbon gave up a check swing single, a sacrifice, a groundout and a broken bat, seeing-eye single.
It was Lugo making yet ANOTHER error that ruined this inning. A fan reading this would assume that Papelbon got beat arounf and Lugo made an error. Papelbon was a victim of Murphy's Law.
Get the facts straight!
Lugo needs to go. There shouldn't be any room on the World Champions roster for a SS who has 10 errors in the 1st week of May. Ridiculous. This was one of Theo's worst signings.
Lugo is WORTHLESS!!! GET HIM OUT OF TOWN!!!!
I am with Ian. That quote above is what comes over the Extra Bases RSS. That is bad writing/headlining/editing. That sounds like it was written by some one who didn't watch the game and put Amalie's name on it. I hope that was the case.
A shortstop is considered the "captain of the infield". He is the anchor. Lugo has now resurfaced the title of "Dr. Strangeglove" that once belonged to a red sox 1st baseman of many years ago. If he were a player that would knock in a 120 runs a year, I would stick with him, but that;s not going to happen. Either trade him, eat the remainder of his contract , or be prepared for more heartbrake losses. As Lee Iacocca has said. "In business you move ahead, or get out of the way". Baseball is a business.
Be careful what you wish for, fellow Sox fans! We ran Renteria out of town and, as probably anyone outside Boston could have predicted, he proved that he's still a very good SS elsewhere. The same would likely happen with Lugo. Having said that, if Tito really intends to keep Lowrie with the big club after Casey and Cora return next week (which I don't know how he can do), he's got to go to more of a platoon at SS. But...when Casey/Cora return, one would think that a pitcher and an infielder must be sent down, which you'd think would have to be Hansen and Lowrie. Am I wrong? And does Tavarez get released when Colon gets promoted in 3 weeks?
You have the future in Jed Lowrie outplaying and outfielding E-Six Lugo (who is a second baseman NOT a shortstop). A position change is needed for Lugo and maybe he will excel at second base elsewhere. I understand he is owed like $22 mil in guaranteed money over the next 2 years, and seeing that Lowrie will be making less then 1 mil in those two years, it's not a reach to package him in a deal.
I noticed that the Rockies have expressed interest in Tavarez (for rotation help) and with TT on the DL til at least the All-Star break, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to trade those two and cash to the Rockies for Manny Corpus or bullpen help!
I agree with Lloyd. Can you give a blown save and/or a loss to the shortstop? This is a game the Sox should have won. How many other games have Lugo's errors cost us? Hopefully there won't be any more.
Lowrie is likely a 2B as well.
