Bartolo Colon's two throwing errors--one on a double-play comebacker in which he split the Sox infielders with his throw to second, the other an errant pickoff throw--have led to three unearned runs, the Mariners taking a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2.
Mike Lowell also was charged with a throwing error on Ichiro's leadoff roller in the third, a miscue that could have been charged to first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who was in a full stretch when he dropped Lowell's low throw. The ball did not hit the dirt, which is why it could have been charged to Youks, who pounded the ground in frustration with the ball.
Youks has gone a big-league record 237 games without an error. Sox have had baserunners in each of the first three innings--JD Drew has two singles, and Jason Varitek dropped a beautiful bunt single but have yet to break through.
