Diamondbacks take 2-0 lead

Posted by Baxter Holmes, Globe Correspondent June 23, 2008 09:12 PM

The snakes from Arizona struck first.

In the seventh inning with one out and runners on first and second, Chris Young doubled off the Green Monster to drive home Conor Jackson, who walked, giving the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

The next batter, Chris Synder, hit a sacrifice grounder to Brandon Moss, who is making his major league debut at first base after Kevin Youkilis left with a contusion under his right eye. Moss bobbled the ball, but tagged Snyder for the out while Mark Reynolds trotted home to give Arizona a 2-0 lead. Reynolds had reached on a single and then advanced on Young's double.

Josh Beckett walked Justin Upton before Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell went to the mound to talk to Beckett. Beckett stayed in the game while reliever David Aardsma warmed up in the bullpen. Arizona's Eric Byrnes flied out to centerfield for the third out.
