D-backs take first game, 2-1

Posted by Baxter Holmes, Globe Correspondent June 23, 2008 11:34 PM

It was a pitcher's duel between Josh Beckett and Arizona's Dan Haren, but the offense went to Haren and so too did the win, 2-1.

Haren (W, 8-4) gave up only two hits in seven innings of work, striking out five.

Beckett (L, 7-5) was equally good giving up two runs on five hits in eight innings while striking out eight.

Arizona's Brandon Lyon picked up the save.

Game two in the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. tomorrow.

Justin Materson (4-1, 3.00 ERA) is the listed starter for Boston while Doug Davis (2-3, 3.65 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Arizona.
