Eight suspended in brawl aftermath

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff June 6, 2008 05:47 PM

Major League Baseball handed out punishments today for last night's brawl between the Red Sox and Rays at Fenway Park, suspending eight players, three of them Red Sox.

Outfielder Coco Crisp got the longest, a 7-game suspension (he is appealing). Jon Lester got 5 games (not appealing), and Sean Casey 3 games (no decision on an appeal yet).

For Tampa Bay, James Shields got 6 games, Jonny Gomes 5 games, Edwin Jackson 5 games, Carl Crawford 4 games, and Akinori Iwamura 3 games.

MLB staggered the punishments. The suspensions for Shields, Gomes, and Lester are slated to begin tonight. Crisp’s was supposed to begin tonight as well, but he’ll get to play while it is appealed. Crawford's will begin June 11, Jackson's June 13, Casey's June 14, and Iwamura's June 17.

The only Sox suspension that will begin tonight is Lester’s, though it will likely only result in his next start being pushed back a day thanks to Monday’s off day. Tonight’s starter Bartolo Colon will likely move up a day and pitch on Wednesday on regular rest, with Lester going Thursday.

When told that he was suspended this afternoon, Crisp claimed he did not know he had been penalized.

Asked if he was interested in hearing which Rays players were suspended, Crisp said "No, not really, doesn't matter to me."

Was Crisp surprised he was suspended?

"Everybody gets suspended when they charge the mound," he said.

All eight players also were fined undisclosed amounts.

  1. Gomes should have gotten more than everyone. That coward coming off the bench and throwing cheap shots should be ridiculed by every fan of this league until the day he retires.

  1. Why was Lester suspended? I didn't see him in the fight.

  1. Wonder why Navarro wasn't suspended. He was throwing punches just as much as anyone, while holding Coco down.

  1. Gomes should've gotten more than he did. It takes a real man to hit someone when he's being held down. Way to go Gomes

  1. Amazing that the cowards from Tampa...Gomes...Crawford...Iwamura...got off so lightly. They certainly breed manly men in the Tampa clubhouse. Hit a man while someone else holds him down!!!
I have no problem with what Shields or Crisp did...that's baseball.
I don't understand why Lester was suspended...the batter he hit was on a breaking ball

  1. Lester got it for throwing at Crawford and Iwamura

  1. Why was Lester sanctioned?

Lester was sanctioned because Lester hit a couple of guys. So he was pushed back a day in his next start.

What I am trying to figure out is: Why did Crisp do that slide on the steal into second on Wednesday?

Crisp's slide was so extreme that even the radio play by play were surprised.

A take out slide on the front end of a double play is one thing, on a straight steal?

  1. Why wasn't that punk manager Maddon suspended? He told reporters BEFORE THE GAME that he had ordered retaliation against Crisp. And that is after Crisp slid hard because Maddon tells his infielders to block the bases with their knees to stop base stealers, a move that is dirty and can ruin careers by injuring the hands of hitters (Crisp has had that kind of injury before and was hurt in the game before last night by that BS at second with the knee. Crisp just did what he had to do, and Maddon ordered retaliation. Maddon is a gutless punk who should stand up to Coco himself instead of having his infielders risk injury to Red Sox batters/runners and start fights by putting knees down in front of the base.

  1. That's crazy for suspending Lester and Casey...I was at the game and taped the whole thing and didn't see them really do anything.

  1. Casey got suspended because he went Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on Shields. Watch the replay. After Eno took Shields down Casey came in and just buried him. Lester I'm so confused by and Crawford should have gotten MUCH more for coming in way late. However I was just as upset that Jacoby half-heartedly pulled Crawford off the pile, but was not nearly as bad as Pedroia pulling up before he got to the pile. I always took him as somebody who would lose his mind should a brawl break out.

  1. crisp started the whole thing he should have gotten 20 games what a punk

  1. ESPN announcers overstated the slide without knowledge of second base being blocked previously, also with a potential for hand/wrist injury. Base runner is entitled to the bag. The slide was a little rough and fortunately neither one was injured. Sox will go on, rivalry w/Rays has been rocky for sometime so I am not surprised. BTW I cannot stand their manager. Also need to know why Lester was suspended.

  1. Outrageous -
    Lester? Casey?
    Gomes 5 games? How about 20 -
and how about that steaming pile of manure sad excuse for a manager Joe Maddon, who incited the whole thing? Send that 4-eyed freak back to Triple A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. At least Crisp fought a FAIR fight; but he gets the biggest suspension, proving that MLB is justice blind (like most of the umpires who can't tell a home-run ball is in fair territory as it passes the pole (Pedroia's.) But the biggest cowards who were taking cheap shots at Crisp as Navarro had him in a bear hug, Gomes, Crawford and Jackson get off with lighter sentences. How can MLB be so blind as to not punish those cowardly punks that could have caused some very serious physical damage and would probably prefer to fight women and children instead of grown men?

Crisp probably got the biggest suspension as they detemined that he caused the fight by charging the mound; but Sheilds was the one that actually started it when he hit Crisp in retaliation for a base running incident in the previous day's game.

MLB should try to get rid of the umpires and find electronic means of making calls. They are the world's worst "judges" as all are BLIND, BLIND, BLIND, BLIND (4 BLIND mice.)

  1. Lester drilled a TB batter in retribution after the brawl. Gomes? Navarro?

  1. Is it true Gomes was suspended 1 game for every hundred pounds he weighs? Hehe...dough boy.

  1. I CANNOT BELIEVED JON LESTER WAS SUSPENDED. I AGREE WITH THE FANS ABOUT GOMEZ, HE SHOULD BE OUT FOR A MONTH OR MORE.

  1. I agree with the punishment that was handed out and I feel the coward gomes who was punching Crisp while someone was holding him down should get more punishment than every one else. I couldn't believe how many rays were on top of crisp punching away. If Casey and Lester were suspended because they came out of the dugout to help their teammate survive ,then they should be rewarded rather than get punished.

  1. Lester was suspended for throwing at a Rays batter after warnings were issued, which is common practice. Casey no idea why he was suspended. Navarro actually didnts throw any punches he just tackled Coco, which is what the catcher always does in those situations

  1. Navarro didn't hit Crisp, he protected him. What where you watching? Navarro deserves a metel for protecting Crisp. I hope some Red Sox players let Crisp know how "Bush Leaque" his actions where. Bye Bye Crisp!!!

  1. I dont think Navarro was doing anymore than trying to hold CoCo down until he cooled off, however, Gomes, Crawford and Iwamura were nothing short of cowards. The only reason they got so many swings in was because CoCo was being held down. Gomes is a Coward!!! Dont know about Lester other than hitting some players, not sure its worth 5 games tho.

  1. Casey got suspended for throwing a punch. It is somewhat visable in the replay that oversees the whole brawl. I couldn't see Lester doing anything wrong... Maybe he got suspended over hitting a couple of hitters while pitching??

  1. Why Lester and Casey? Also Navarro tackled Crisp-He should be gone
And that loser Gomes shoul be gone longer

Posted by Sanjeev June 6, 08 08:09 PM
  1. Shields starts it and Coco gets 7 days to his 6. Gomes , Crawford, and Navarro only gets 5,3. and 0 accordingly . Makes alot of sense, doesn't it? But is anyone really surprised with the incompetence of MLB executives! Shame on the Red Sox upper management if don't put up a big stink about it ! Show some kahoonies!

  1. Gomes 4 games??? What a joke!!! That piece of garbage deserves the MAX for throwing cheap shots at a guy pinned to the ground. Gomes is a scumbag, he did the same thing in a pre-season game against the yanks. Crawford too. Those two cheap maggots were intentionally trying to hurt Crisp, dropping hammers on him on the bottom of the pile. Why is Lester suspended? Did I miss something? It should be fun the next time the two teams meet.
