Fisk: 'Tek has 'a good four or five years' left
Jason Varitek likely has several strong seasons left behind the plate according to Hall of Fame catcher Carleton Fisk.
Fisk, in town today for the opening of a new Museum of Science exhibit dedicated to the science of baseball, also called Varitek the glue of the Red Sox.
On a morning after Varitek slugged a three-run homer against the Orioles, Fisk had little worry that Varitek will not be durable in the short run. "He's got a good four or five years left,'' Fisk said of Varitek, but he added that 'Tek may slow down a bit as the season progresses, given the strain that the position places on a player. "Catching will wear you down,'' he said.
Fisk, who played professionally under age 45, was one of several Hall of Famers at the opening of "Baseball as America,'' a touring exhibit organized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Coopertown, N.Y. Among other Hall of Famers in attendance: Bobby Doerr, Carl Yastrzemski, Eddie Murray, and Wade Boggs. The exhibit runs through Aug. 1.
