Hazel Mae leaving NESN

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff June 2, 2008 08:31 PM

Hazel Mae

NESN today announced that SportsDesk anchor Hazel Mae will leave the sports network at the end of the month.

“After four incredible and exciting years at NESN, I’ve decided now was the right time for me to make this difficult decision to leave,” Hazel Mae said in a statement released today. “It has been both a personal and professional privilege to be a part of NESN and the dedicated SportsDesk team. During my time with the network, I’ve had more than a few once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, including the chance to cover two World Series and a Super Bowl. I am grateful to the Red Sox and Bruins ownership groups, NESN president, Sean McGrail, and all the players and staff who have supported and challenged me. Most importantly, I’d like to thank the amazing and passionate sports fans of New England, who have welcomed me into their homes and given me a chance to do the kind of work I enjoy.”

“Hazel has been a special part of the NESN family," said Joel Feld, vice president of programming for NESN. "Every day, she brought energy, smarts and a fan sensibility to our SportsDesk audience. We are sorry to see her leave, but wish her every success in future professional endeavors."

Mae joined NESN in August, 2004 and has served as the anchor for SportsDesk and the host of the Ultimate Red Sox Show and The Buzz.

  1. Sports desk just won't be the same. All the best Hazel, you'll be missed

    Posted by L.J. June 3, 08 09:35 PM
  1. So why is Hazel leaving? Was she fired? Contract not renewed? (perhaps NESN is too "cheap"?)

Did NESN wanted yet another blonde? Is Hazel going to the Yankees' YES network? What's the reason?

NESN is going downhill... I really hate their new "dead on" Fenway camera view by the way... the players (pitcher, catcher, umpire and batter) all appear to be stacked on top of each other (not unlike today's video games). I miss the default "left center" view that most of MLB uses (and has used successfully for decades). Plus, NESN's score bar disappears far too frequently. Low budget at NESN?

  1. Hazel will be missed in New England. She did a fantastic job at NESN. I'll be watching a lot less of NESN in the future............

  1. I'm not going to miss her stupid buh byes and other stupid phrases...

Personally I prefer someone who actually KNOWS sports and am not watching for her puppies.

  1. Oh well. Hey had to listen to her for what...30 sec promo's during sox games. BIG DEAL! I'm now on the left coast and still avid fan of the sox. So as long as Don and Jerry are around who cares. I don't watch to sox games to see pretty women, I watch the sox games cause I love the sox. Neeeext!

  1. We are disappointed on NESN's decision on NOT renewing Hazel Mae's contract. We know how popular the Red Sox is but, you also rely on advertising revenue. For the past FOUR (4) years we have encouraged our community to watch the post game merely because of HAZEL's wonderful job, pleasant personality and pride of our community

Because of your decision, we'll disseminate this information to all ASIAN viewers and ask them NOT to watch the post game shows that will affect your advertising standing.

She's the only ASIAN in your Broadcast Team that represent's our community.

  1. GOOD BYE AND GOOD LUCK ... I know my son will be sad to hear your leaving !

  1. Hazel brought her own flare, personality and everday fan perspective to Boston sports programming.
I'm saddened "Haze Daze" will be no more.
I don't know what NESN is thinking.
    Best of luck, Hazel Mae!

  1. I for one am not sorry to see her go. I like seeing knowledgeable women in the industry, but to use certains "assets" as Hazel obviously did, was degrading and embarrassing to me as a woman. I've got many male friends who are disappointed but they can always buy a Playboy. I do wish her luck as she has some talent, but she may want to get a wardrobe that fits and covers a little more. Bring back Tina!!!

Posted by Marzo June 4, 08 10:37 AM
  1. Hazel was a ray of bright sunshine who brought a certain essence to the SportsDesk and her other shows. She made the news of sports just what it should be: Light, fun, and cutely witty. Innuendo has it she is not leaving the neighborhood. Good for us; good for Hazel. NESN should open up the coffers a bit wider. First Tina, now Hazel. You know, NESN execs, you do have to pay for our enjoyment.

  1. I've noticed that NESN has hired nothing but blonde women here lately. What's up with that?

Good luck to you Hazel...wherever you're going (???)

Posted by Debbie June 4, 08 12:41 PM
  1. Hazel,
I love you and will miss your smiling face...

NESN didn't appreciate your talent, how can they lose you and Tina in the same year ???
Please come to Washington, D.C (MASN) and help us extend Fenway Park South (Camden Yards )...

    Best Of Luck !

  1. I've been living out of town for the last couple of years so I don't see Sportsdesk. But I was there when she started so I've seen her, and honestly, I don't understand what the big deal is. I thought she was pretty annoying, and she really isn't that cute. That chick Hiedi thats there now, thats a different story. Keep her around, NESN.

Posted by Brad June 4, 08 06:29 PM
  1. Good luck to Hazel. There has been an obvious change in the NESN quality and product, for the very worse, for 2-3 years now. The DVD from last years WS win was the worst professional production I have ever seen of it's type. The production of the games themselves has dropped off too and whether anyone wants to admit it or not Jerry Remy is either incredibly aloof or putting on an incredible act as being such, both of which are annoying and obnoxious. His self promotion is rank. Once they have camera men who don't try to zoom in on pitches as they leave the hand, we will have an indication that they are paying help better and given Remy a cut.

  1. With the big money of the Red Sox and Bruins behind NESN, why is this cable network run on the cheap? By all accounts, most of their employees -- including Mae -- receive mediocre pay.

Posted by Des June 5, 08 07:30 AM
  1. How is over 150k a year mediocre pay? I just think she thought she was hot stuff and could demand an outrageous salary. buh-bye.

  1. Good luck. You have been a pleasure to watch and listen to in the mornings. Towards that end, I hope NESN knows what it's doing. First Tina, then Hazel. Please keep in mind that you have women in your audience as well who appreciate talented and professional sports reporting and are not more concerned with "eye candy." I know I'm tuning in a lot less now.

  1. Mean people suck, I cannot believe the horrible comments made here. Hazel provided more professionalism than many of the old timers I have have seen in Boston sports today. I have followed Boston sports since the 60's and Hazel will be missed terribly.
GOOD LUCK HAZEL in all you do. You added some real class to Boston broadcasting. Thanks for the great service

  1. No offense to the current Sports Desk anchors, but it isn't the same without Hazel. She delivered the sports with professionalism and confidence. I enjoyed every time she was on. I was disappointed to see her go. I don't watch Sports Desk as much any more. There just isn't the same flair to it anymore. Best of luck to you Hazel in the future wherever you go. I just hope you eventually land back in Boston.

  1. I really liked Hazel Mae. I was in Boston eating at a nearby pub with my son. Hazel saw him with his sox shirt on and came walking up to us and starting chatting red sox talk. My son's eyes were beaming because he knew her from NESN and she was beautiful. She gave him a big hug, we took a picture. We sent the picture to her and she signed it with a nice note and sent it back. Her entire time on NESN she was nothing less than a class act.

  1. Can we just get back to sports? I am sick to death of these stupid sideline reporters and I am sick of equal rights. Sorry but women do not mix with baseball, hockey, or baseball. The only way I'd find them interesting is if they reported topless.
"Hey coach - your running back fumbled twice and you're trailing by 14. What are you going to do?"
"Well, we need to hang onto the ball and score more. We need touchdowns instead of field goals."
This would be a typical woman asking a coach her dumb little questions at the half or coming back from halftime.

  1. How could u worthless Bostonians not appreciate those sweater puppets?!? I just got the MLB network and I'm in love! Baseball just got even better!!! Is that possible? Even if she doesn't know one thing about the game I'll listen to whatever she has to say about the greatest sport.

Posted by JIM GRANT February 20, 09 10:23 AM
  1. Just discovered this chick on MLB Net. Decent enough reporter, but pretty damn hot for a 38-year-old. Hate that I missed her early 30s at NESN. One of the hotter Phillipinos around, haters must be into Suzan Waldman types.

Keep stackin' the deck with stacked chicas, MLB Net!!

Posted by Reinhold Fielding March 18, 09 03:48 PM
  1. I also enjoyed Hazel's time, she is hot, but she also did her job very well. All you people talking about bring back Tina, she was horrible, yes she was kind of a MILF, but she was retarted and knew nothing about sports. At least Hazel did a good job at being seemingly somewhat knowledgable about sports, especially hockey, and she had a good personality. Yes, Heidi is very hot, but she is not very good at what she does, lets be honest, she wouldn't have a job if not for her great looks, I think Hazel might! Overall, Hazel will be missed, but we will all see her again in the future on MLB.com!
