Red Sox manager Terry Francona revealed today that David Ortiz, who recently got the cast taken off his injured left wrist, hit off of a tee in front of doctors last night at Fenway Park, and that he "did OK" in the session.
"He [Ortiz] went out there last night in front of the doctors and swung off the tee, just kind of easy," Francona said today in his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio station WEEI 850 AM. "But he did OK. They just want to see him before we go on this road trip and because once he gets on this road trip, he's gonna start swinging in BP at some point and they just want to lay their eyes on him before he gets going.
"I think everything's going pretty well. It's pretty much like they said it would. That's good news. There haven't been any bad surprises or anything that's gotten in the way. Just have to let it take its normal progression and then we'll get him back."
Ortiz will hit off a tee again today.
Francona also said first baseman Kevin Youkilis would be back in the starting lineup tonight. Youkilis was hit in the eye with an errant throw Monday night. He came into last night's game as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning.
