Ortiz to DL
BALTIMORE - David Ortiz is heading to the disabled list and will likely be out for at least a month.
The Red Sox DH had an MRI at Mass General Monday and it revealed an extensor carpi ulnaris -- a partially torn sheath of his left wrist which is basically what holds the tendon in place according to manager Terry Francona.
The tendon itself is not torn and Francona said surgery was unlikely.
Team sources also indicated Ortiz will be in a cast for two weeks. It will take another 10 to 14 days to begin swinging the bat and getting into playing condition. The injury is not considered common.
Because it's Ortiz's top hand, it's considered an important injury.
Francona has several options in replacing Ortiz, mentioning the possibility of Sean Casey playing more.

Yea baby the steroid machine Big Sloppi out for a month and possibly the year
Whoop Whoop!!
ESPN must be ticked off
Just throwing it out there.....if he is lost for the season and he would be if they have to do surgery then.... what about Barry Bonds?
Message to Tito and Theo Go sign Barry Bonds!! Or see if you can get Griffey in here Asap!!!! We don't want to wait and see!!! Preferably Bonds as he wil only cost money...
An extensor carpi ulnaris is NOT an injury, it is a muscle. So Papi injured that muscle?
Isn't this the same injury that Nomar had a few years back?
I can't believe that!! What are they gonna do?
Bonds...
Ortiz's injury is the same injury Nomar had a few years ago.
Nick,
Love your work for the Globe and the Sox. I think you're extremely talented and were lucky to have you. I just wanted to point out that the extensor carpi ulnaris is actually a muscle in your forearm. As the muscle moves down your arm towards your wrist, it tapers off and becomes a cord-like tendon. The tendon sheath that Papi tore holds the tendon in its proper location at the wrist. So, if the sheath is compromised, then the tendon is free to slide around. It's obviously not supposed to, and it ends up hitting other structures in the wrist like nerves causing the pain.
Go Sox.
