Pap to Rays: 'Payback is a bitch'
In his weekly appearance on Comcast SportsNet yesterday, Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon said the Sox feud with the Rays is not over yet.
"Obviously as you can see it's a war when we go play those guys," Papelbon said on the Sox rivalry with the Rays.
“In my opinion it is a bunch of bull what they did," said Papelbon on the Rays piling on during the fight. "All I got to say is what comes around goes around. Payback is a bitch. In my opinion, and the way I feel right now, this thing isn’t all settled and done. We still got to play them a few more times and I know when we go into Tropicana things will be a little different than when went in there last time.”
Last Thursday night, Rays starter James Shields hit Sox outfielder Coco Crisp in the leg with a pitch in the second inning. Crisp then dropped his bat and charged the mound and a fight ensued. Eight players were suspended, including three Red Sox, for the brawl. Crisp, who received a seven-game suspension, has an appeal hearing set for June 23.
Sox lefthander Jon Lester finished his five-game suspension last night, enabling him to start against the Orioles tonight. Sean Casey has not had to make a decision about whether to appeal his three-game suspension because the penalties were staggered. His is slated to begin Saturday.

Somebody tell the boy to loosen his dancing tights.......or else he'll just end up adding to his suspension......team play, not individual bravado!
Well that was stupid. Are you really that much of a punk, Papelbon? The whole thing was Coco's fault, and you're acting like their whole team was the culprit?
When is this guy with one brain cell learn to keep his mouth shut ? Whether it's about revenge or the millions he's going to earn and how much he is underpaid, it's a shame his words can't match his considerable talent. I guess it's too much to hope for that the leadership of the team can help him to muffle it.
Yeah, the Rays are punks and they were being stupid pounding on Coco, but I'd like to see this whole thing end. Everybody needs to grow up a bit before this escalates any more.
My favorite part of the interview was when Paps said he was glad Papi was now an American citizen because now when he takes all of his money in poker "it will be US currency and not those pesos he was using. " That kid has such a great sense of humor.
Paps needs to settled down. Coco started the fiasco by running his mouth and the Rays' pitcher just hit him in the leg. Coco's act has worn thin and he's not as good as advertised. The Sox need to worry about winning ball games and not about the next retaliation.
Pap is right! The Rays still have something coming, after that sissy Gomes wailed away on Crisp when Crisp was hog tied and on the ground. My respect for Crisp skyrocketed after that episode.
How about a little chin music for Mr. Gomes???!!!!
Wah..... Wah....Wah.... Throw at Gomes so he can give you a proper welcome to the Trop, punk.......
Go Paps! Sheilds threw the pitch. Ghomes jumps in. Crawford pulls hair. Crisp isn't a saint here, but as an old former pitcher, this will have a long memory.
Papelbon is a complete buffoon. Can't somebody in the Red Sox organization please muzzle this ignorant hick?
papelbon is a bum!
Go Yankees
Why don't you just send a letter to Mr. Selig explaining which player you're going to hit and the inning you plan on doing it??
Hint - SHUT UP AND JUST DO IT PAPS!!!! Dumb as a brick!!!
He's right. Given the right circumstances, payback can indeed be a bitch.
"Pesos he was using?"
Stick to pitching buddy. I love ya' brah.
I love Jonathan Papelbon, but Coco running out to the mound instead of to first base was what started this crap. To blame the Rays for sticking up for one of their pitchers is naive. It would have all blown over if Coco just took it and moved on. He knew he was going to get hit, Shields hit him in the ass, take your base and move on.
What Crisp did was wrong. He should have just manned up and went to first. Even Rome said he was wrong and most other announcers said it as well.
After his mouthing off, going in hard against Aki, nothing would have continued if he had just went to first. It's not like Shields threw at his head.
And now Papelbon starts mouthing off? Get a life.
Let's be clear that "Pap" is the kind of moron who would be denounced in Boston if he played for any other team. He pretends to be macho, especially since he doesn't bat, and he is protected by the most hypocritical sports media in the country.
Pap needs to shut his mouth. Regardless of whether you agree with what happened regarding the fight, he is only setting himself and his teammates up for prolonged suspensions if anything happens. MLB can now look at his comments as proof of intent.
IMO, Coco deserved everything he got and showed his true colors with his uppity remarks during the postgames interviews.
Papelbon is a feisty guy, but he shouldnt tell the Rays ahead of time if he has plans for payback. That will just get him a bigger suspension if something happens.
Papelbon should be a pro and shut his mouth. His big mouth is just going to get him or another Red Sox player a longer suspension. Will he ever learn to shut up and play ball. I followed the Red Sox since 48 and never seen a big mouth who didn't pay for his stupidity one way or another. Just shut up and do what we all know is going to happen. But Papelbon is needed very badly by the Red Sox for the entire season let someone else take care of Crisp's problems.
The Rays have always been a Mickey Mouse organization. maybe because they're too close to Orlando. For years they didn't have the talent to compete so they threw at people. A completely adolescent franchise. Now that they've got a few wins, and more on the way undoubtedly, you'd think they might grow up. But no. Same old Rays. When you play them, watch your head. They can't beat you, but they can hurt you. So there.
All that said, Pap, please just shut up. These games are already hard enough to watch without you pouring gas on their fire. Let your pitching speak for you. The Sox should have learned by now that a championship ring is the best revenge.
Sox should play baseball and do not sink to the low level antics of the Rays!!!! They are a bunch of punk kids and the Sox should be professional and not get involved with that crap!!!
Waaaaah! Quit your cryin. What are you going to do anyway, run in from the pen? Grab a bat there Paps. The Sox are starting to worry about the Rays now and can't let it go, Cuckoo started all this crap and it should have ended when Shields hit him. That's how it works Cookie, now take your base.
Beantown celebrating a total lack of class, Coco was treated right by not having it thrown at his head, take you butt to first base and shut up. Now the skirt Papelbon is running his mouth? Easy to do in the AL when you do not have to bat. Bring it to Tampa boys, you about to find out how the worlds a changin....Rays not going anywhere....and the Trop is about to be like coming to Ray Jay...
Odd that no one mentions the Shortstop for Tampa putting down his leg jamming CoCo's thumb on the slide. I have never seen someone block 2d base that way. What would the Rays have done if CoCo had gone in feet first and broke the Shortstops leg? Or better yet, what would they have done if Lugo had done that to their player trying to steal 2d??? I think from now on they should go in feet first, if they break his leg....then he will not put it there next time!
Yes payback is a bitch this why Coco was hit " payback"
Please, someone talk some sense into Papelbon....Coco was wrong to charge the mound...he knew it was coming and they didn't throw at his head....he should have just taken his medicine....we are too good a team to have this stuff interfering with another run at the world championship....
god i love pap
Way to go Pap!
Pap, just shut up and pitch... you sound like you are 12 years old...
what a joke, good for the Rays they red sox rub a lot of teams and fans the wrong way between Manny standing in the box for hours after homers and Papelbons wack ass celebrations. Their a team of wannabe tough guys.
I wish Pap had kept his feelings to himself on this one. Now, the next time he buzzes one of the Rays hitters in a close game - which would seemingly be the only reason he'd be pitching in the first place - he's either going to get tossed or charged by the hitter and suspended. Just another sad chapter in this sordid tale.
