Seventh inning stretch....and the Rays are barkin'

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff June 11, 2008 09:07 PM

Aardsma gave up a two-out double to Adam Jones in the seventh but punched out Freddie Bynum, preserving 6-1 Sox lead.
Did you notice that the Rays are ticked off again? After falling to the Angels, 4-2, Scott Kazmir of the Rays unloaded on plate umpire Deryl Cousins.
"That was unbelievable. I've never seen anything like that before," the 24-year-old Kazmir said, according to wire reports "I mean, you come into the game and some of the veteran guys are talking about an umpire that doesn't like calling anybody out on strikes. They called him 'shoe box.' You shouldn't change your zone just because of the count."
There were 18 whiffs in the game, but only two came on a called third strike.
The Rays figure to drop two games behind the Sox if the Sox can hold onto this lead. Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is singlehandedly keeping the Sox from building on that lead, diving to his left to throw out Jacoby Ellsbury, then ranging behind the bag to throiw out Dustin Pedroia.
The O's are proud of the fact they've come back 14 times from deficits of two runs or more to win this season. That's the most in the majors.
